South Pacific soul monster Fat Freddy’s Drop will release their new single “Pull The Catch” on 17 November 2008 through Kartel. A sunny, reggae-infused taster of things to come “Pull The Catch” is idiosyncratic FFD, which draws on the band’s unique lifestyle and laidback outlook on life. Much like “Cay’s Crays”, from their award winning debut album “B.O.A.T.S.”, “Pull The Catch” was born out of a fishing trip in their idyllic setting of New Zealand’s South Island. A spot of pre-dawn fishing, with vocalist Dallas, and his uncle led to the group returning from their trip singing an almost fully formed song, which was recorded immediately in their conveniently placed beachside studio.
Having been holed up in the studio for well over 12 months, Fat Freddy’s Drop have finally unveiled the title of their album to be “Big BW”. Set for a physical UK release in Spring 2009, the intriguingly titled follow-up was due to be released last Christmas, but in inimitable Fat Freddy’s style, the band refused to be dictated to by the music industry and have taken their own sweet time recording what will be one of the most anticipated album releases of 2009. In fact, demand for the next instalment has been so vast that the band were cajoled into releasing “The Camel” back in July just to keep the rabid Fat Freddy’s fanbase contented. Word of month around the release was such that it propelled “The Camel” to no. 23 in the indie singles chart while tickets for their forthcoming European tour were selling in record time.
So it’s unsurprising that the seven-strong New Zealand collective, renowned for their unique blend of Hi-Tek Soul, Jazz and Reggae, have also announced a second night at London’s prestigious Roundhouse venue on Dec 5th. Having triumphed at some of the world’s biggest festivals – from Glastonbury to the Big Day Out via Sonar in Spain and Le Printemps de Bourges in France and not forgetting Bluff Oyster Festival in New Zealand – Fat Freddy’s Drop is first and foremost a live collective; no two Freddy’s gigs are ever the same. The band’s distinctive boil up of bottom heavy beats, future funk and freaky sidesteps drops over two to three hour-long jams of sonic unity between band and audience. The Roundhouse shows will bring to a close Fat Freddy’s 18 date European tour that sees the band return to the northern hemisphere to preview tracks from their forthcoming album.
Three years after debut album Based On A True Story (B.O.A.T.S.) re-wrote musical history at home in New Zealand, “Big BW” is set to unleash the sound of future-funk voodoo on a global level.
