Happy Birthday, Chris! I don't think you're officially old until your balls dip into the toilet water while you're shitting. I know you pride yourself in being a low-hanger, but you probably have a couple more years before they're floating around on your turds.

Tonight has been absolutely surreal. I've been following this election for about 2 years straight, hoping Obama would get elected, and today it happened. Today they started calling him 'President Elect Obama.' Even though I was completely certain he was going to win, I couldn't help but have a little doubt in the back of my mind. Even we wonder if America is too stupid or too corrupt to act in its own best interest. But I stood in line for nearly an hour today with a bunch of Democrats, waiting to cast that vote. It felt good (and was actually pretty fun. We took turns doing Palin impressions).

I am confident we made the right choice. I think Obama has the potential to do seriously great things for the whole world...we just gotta go with it and keep paying attention. I mean that's the most amazing thing to me- millions of Americans simultaneously pulled their heads out of their asses long enough to get organized and make something positive happen. That's a first in my lifetime. It's unrealistic to think everyone in the US will maintain this level of interest in politics and world affairs after tonight, but you never know... Barack Hussein Obama is the 44th President of the United States.

It's a trip.

Didn't his speech just make the hairs on your neck stand up. Obama is one of the most compelling men, you could listen to him read a phone book.
I'm not in to politics and don't understand pretty much any of it but i know that this is the best thing that could have happened not just for Ameica but for the rest of the world.
Bring on the movie with Denzel Washington!

I was actually expecting a little more out of his speech. That crowd started forming like 6 hours before he showed up and he only spoke for 20 minutes. It was kind of a greatest hits speech from the last 2 years of campaigning. I'm with you, though, on his speaking. That's why he won a Grammy for reading his book and recording it. His speech about race still makes me cry, and that speech he gave in 2004 made me a believer.

The easy part is over. He won the contest. The hard part is going to be cleaning up this fucking mess. America is in a baaaad way right now. We know the world has problems, but so do we. We're one of the dumbest countries on the planet, we import essentially everything, we have no jobs, we have no money, everyone hates us and we all hate each other.

I think if anyone can pull us out of this, it's Barack Obama, but make no mistake- it ain't gonna be easy. He's a long game player. He's all about strategy. We may not see immediate changes but I think in the long run we will all be better off. I'm not holding my breath for that tax cut, though. The country needs income. As a symbol, Obama means a lot. Let's keep our fingers crossed that as a President he can mean just as much.

EDIT: The last time there were that many people in Grant Park in Chicago, they were getting their heads bashed in by police during the DNC protest of 1968. I think that's worth noting.

Seriosuly though, congratulations on electing the next assassinated president. I'm sorry, it's great news, but I can't help fearing for the guys life now. Some asshole is bound to spoil it for everyone; I mean things just don't stay this good do they?

I also worry about how many idiots, after huddling round the TV of their local bar where they drank too much, went on a race-hate crime spree in anger.

I don't think it can be underestimated that how happy most Americans feel, others will feel a lot more strongly the other way.

Don't get me wrong, the unavoidable consequences that a minority few decide to act out should never hold people like Obama back, and I am sure he very aware of these things (and I admire him all the more for not letting such fears stop him in any way), but I just worry is all.
