Paul Goodwin is a Cambridge-based singer-songwriter, born in London and raised in Ilford. He started out on the piano (apparently failing his grade 8 first time round due to wearing an Iron Maiden t-shirt!) before learning to play the church organ and then guitar. Scars is the culmination of almost a decade spent writing and recording in various rooms around Cambridge with a little help from some musician friends (Mike Barnes - drums, Jody Botting - bass, David Greeves - pedal steel, Anja Dove - violin, Hannah Whitehall - vocals). Paul took care of everything from the engineering, mixing and mastering to the booklet design. His only previous album was The Burning Shed Session, released on internet label Burning Shed, which features early solo versions of a few of these songs and gained him a healthy sprinkling of fans around the world. His sparse, evocative Blue Nile-esque songs and plaintive vocals have seen him touring Canada, performing at Cambridge Folk Festival and supporting artists including Waterson:Carthy, Wayne Hussey, Boo Hewerdine and Joseph Arthur. To promote the album, the track 60 Miles With A Slow Puncture will also be available as a free download from 2nd Feb for a limited period. ‘Most songwriters, even some of the famous ones, would sacrifice relatives to have one song as good as Watertight' - REPEAT fanzine 'The most beautiful thing I have heard in ages... reminds me why I like music in the first place.' - Apex magazine '…a gentle yet compelling stage presence that can silence the rowdiest of crowds' - Explorer magazine Live show (with more to be announced): Jan 31 Portland Arms, Cambridge
