And so it begins. We warned you that these things might happen, and they are.
2008 has been a momentous year for the human race, if for only having elected the first US president in years that the public has been excited about. Now add to that the acknowledgment from one of the world's largest heavy metal magazines, of one of the most devastating and spectacular albums to be released this year, and it seems to us like things are actually starting to change around here.
Released this past April on Hydra Head Records, Meanderthal is the sophomore full-length from Miami / Atlanta's TORCHE, a band who had previously made a name for themselves touring and releasing stoner-drenched doom albums in the underground metal circuit. Everyone who knew them knew there was something that made TORCHE different from the rest, and now we know why. Meanderthal encapsulates some of the heaviest moments all of metal has seen this year, yet, somehow manages to add a pop sensibility to the mix, making for a combination that could have possibly created the most accessible metal album the world has ever heard.
What's more? Decibel went on to name other Hydra Head albums such as 5ive's "Hesperus" (#26), Gridlink's "Amber Gray" (#24), Pyramids' "Pyramids" (#14), and Harvey Milk's "Life... The Best Game In Town" (#11), among the other top 40 finalists. We call that a sweep!
