Debut album released 2nd February 2009 on Paw Tracks
You may have heard of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele, a new pop musician from Oxford, Mississippi. If not, you’ll be hearing a lot from him in the coming year.
Dent’s unique vocal style - part crooner, part falsetto, and 101 percent showman - reflects the influence of some of his favourite singers (Prince, Serge Gainsbourg, and Lee Hazlewood to name a few). His love of various song styles results in a unique combination of ukulele, drums, pedal steel, violin, horns and bass. One second his songs hint at Brazilian Tropicalia, the next a ‘50s barbershop quartet or early 20th century country swing.
By integrating his favourite pop music from around the world and writing about what is in front of him (his town, his friends, and pretty girls), Dent takes the “think global, buy local” motto to heart. He may just be one of the 21st century’s first sustainable pop singers.
Animal Collective first heard Dent May when they were recording their new album in Oxford Mississippi in early 2008 and quickly signed him to their Paw Tracks imprint. Now we present his incredibly impressive debut full length, The Good Feeling Music of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele, recorded with Rusty Santos (Panda Bear, Animal Collective, White Magic et al) in May's home, a double-wide trailer in Taylor, Mississippi (population: 300).
With excitement reaching a fever pitch a new term has been coined: Dent May-nia. Catch it now, and throughout 2009 when Dent will be touring the world including SXSW.
In other Paw Tracks news we've got an extra special limited edition winter release;
An AA side 7" single, the first outing of Paw Tracks’ new singles division, kicking off with some holiday jams.
A. REVEREND GREEN "Be Good To Earth This Season"
AA. DRAWLINGS "Wolfie's Christmas"
Limited edition 7" vinyl to 1000 copies, Released Dec 8th
"Be Good To Earth This Season” features two extraordinary and distinct voices; Antony Hagerty from ANTONY & THE JOHNSONS and Kria Brekkan formerly of Múm, and was written by Reverend Green (aka Brad Truax, member of Home, Jah Division, as well as being Animal Collective’s fearless tour manager and lighting designer). Enlisting help, Brad recorded and produced the track with long time friend and collaborator Barry London (Jah Division, Samara Lubelski, Oneida). Sounding like some recently unearthed vintage 78rpm; this track is a gentle but inspirational meditation on self-development and the importance of earth awareness.
On its flip is the first solo recording of RINGS member Abby Portner under the name of her new project Drawlings. “Wolfie’s Christmas” was recorded with the help of Dave Portner (ANIMAL COLLECTIVE, Terrestrial Tones, Avey Tare and Kria Brekkan) and Rusty Santos (member of The Presence, and engineer/producer extraordinaire). There's the obligatory sleighbells but “Wolfie’s Christmas” is a haunted children’s’ carol that will make you glad you’re tucked up inside and warm by the fire.
