ALBUM RE-ENTERS BILLBOARD TOP 200 FOR FIRST TIME SINCE RELEASE WEEK
Los Angeles' The Airborne Toxic Event's first single off it's eponymous debut album, the haunting "Sometime Around Midnight," has garnered a ton of attention, most recently being named by iTunes as the #1 Alternative Song of 2008 and breaking into the top ten of the alternative radio chart this past week. The song has had a slow and steady climb up the charts beginning with it being added about a year ago at KROQ in Los Angeles, a remarkable feat as the band did not have management or label at the time. After signing to indie label Majordomo Records the song was officially shipped nationally in July and has been slowly gaining a strong following at the format. This week it broke through to the top 10, and is currently ranked #9 on the Alternative BDS chart and #8 on Mediabase. Breaking into the top ten is a rare occurrence for bands without the support of major labels but this marks the second time recently that a Southern California band has been achieved this; The Silversun Pickups cracked the top ten with their smash "Lazy Eye." The radio airplay has buoyed sales as the album re-enters Billboard's Top 200 Albums for the first time since release week.
But domestic radio is only part of the story, as the band were the musical guests at "The Late Show with David Letterman" this past Friday, their third late night television appearance. If you want to see David Letterman truly get excited about a performance here:
The appearance was a rousing success and spurred sales of the album, moving it into the top forty bestsellers on Amazon. It also shot up at iTunes where it attained top 50 status on the iTunes overall chart and top 20 on the alternative chart.
While the band's fans have been accumulating in the U.S. across the Atlantic in the U.K. "Sometime Around Midnight" was recently added to BBC's Radio One's extremely tight playlist. The single for the song will be released commercially January 26 with the album due out February 9th.
In the U.S., tour dates for a North American run follows a tour of the UK. Tickets are selling briskly as evident by the need to add second shows at New York's Bowery Ballroom and Chicago's Schubas after the first shows sold out instantaneously.
