Announce US Tour to SXSW!
Takka Takka, a Brooklyn band, gets the guitar-picking patterns on its album “Migration” (Ernest Jenning) from all over: Minimalism and math-rock, Africa and Indonesia, funk and folk and psychedelia, often over beats that sound like rock anthems burnished smooth by the notes pelting above. The band members sing as if to themselves, murmuring glimpses of catastrophe - “You walk around while the city's on fire too. Fight on.” - and transcendence: “Talk without making a sound. You and universe.” Despite some earthbound moments most of the music is rock as meditation, with orderly repetition trying to keep the deepest fears at bay. - The New York Times
Sister Suvi is a project of Patrick Gregoire, of Islands notoriety. A trio prominently featuring singer Merrill [Garbus] on tenor ukulele (seriously!) and fiddle, they played an impressive set of jumpy, catchy songs that the audience absolutely adored. I am looking forward to an album release soon, partly to confirm that my scribbled “acoustic female-fronted three-piece Pixies” is still an accurate description of the band but mostly because quirky, confident songs like “Monsters,” “Nothing,” and “Run Run Run” were in my head for days after the show. - TinyMixTapes.com
Two of indie-rock's true gems, Takka Takka and Sister Suvi, will be hitting the road together this March for dates across the country, coalescing at this year's SXSW Music Marathon!
Brooklyn's Takka Takka spent much of 2008 supporting their second full length, Migration, which received massive critical acclaim by the likes of Spin, Blender, Pitchfork, The NY Times, and countless others nationwide. Supporting the record and riding the wave of their success, the band spent much of their time performing shows around the Northeast with friends Oxford Collapse, Mates of State, and others, and ultimately made their way onto the soundtrack for Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist,
Sister Suvi might be slightly lesser known, but that is likely to change once folks witness their insatiable pop genius. Formed in 2005 with a strong DIY ethos, the Montreal-based trio began touring immediately and released "The Colour EP" in 2006 with engineer and friend Mark Lawson (The Unicorns, Islands, Arcade Fire), which resulted in a tour w/ guitarist Patrick Gregoire's other band, Islands. In 2008, the band self released The Mandala of Power, a mini-CD which landed on many year-end lists and ultimately found the band performing w/ the likes of the Dirty Projectors, Daniel Johnston, and more. Sister Suvi plans to release their debut full-length, Now I Am Champion, later this year (recorded again with Mark Lawson), and after their tour with Takka Takka, will spend most of Spring on tour with Thao with the Get Down Stay Down.
making them one of 2008's most stand-out acts both in New York and around the country.
