Nestled within a remote farmland dwelling in deepest rural England lies a run-down tin shack from whence stems the music of Jake Flowers. It is perhaps little wonder that from a quiet life amongst the vast horizons and more-or-less honest folk of South Shropshire swept forth a yearning for wider experience... a desire distilled within ‘Small World’ – Jake’s debut single with Concrete Recordings. Having recorded with an enthused Gavin Monaghan (Editors, Scott Matthews), Jake spent the festive season indulging in local ale and performances beside the fire of his beloved local hostelry. Jake Flowers is now stepping out of the wilds to promote the single.
As a thirteen year old boy Jake Flowers picked up his father’s guitar and started writing songs. As he has so far been unable to stop, the accompanying three track sampler provides a small taste of a vast repertoire. A romantic half-true account of a fireworks robbery; a dark tale of temptation and Catholic guilt and a made up memory in response to a failed seduction: Fireworks, Annabel and Anyhow respectively recall the story-telling era of yesteryear.
Jake’s characteristic voice is already familiar across local airwaves, with countless plays and sessions at regional BBC and commercial stations. Overwhelming support from Kerrang Radio, who invited him as the only artist to represent the West Midlands when they hosted the Local Radio Academy event, has culminated in a recent introduction on the Janice Long show. Somewhat of a figure on the Midlands live scene; his performances have included playing at the West Midlands Summer Symphony with the English Symphony Orchestra and a Boxing Day half-time performance at Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Molineux stadium (an honoured invitation as a result of a similarly sterling performance earlier on in the year). It comes therefore, as no surprise that word of Jake Flowers is spreading to the larger public arena.
Indeed, Jake Flowers tip-toed gently onto the festival scene with performances at Green Man, Secret Garden and Handful of Twisted Folk but it was an encounter at the largest greenfield festival in the world that really got him noticed, leaving organisers spellbound. Jake was shortlisted for the 2008 Glastonbury Festival Emerging Talent Competition after being voted for by the editor of Q magazine, Paul Rees. His name was passed on to various venues throughout the site and he secured a place to play at ‘Late N Live.’ In recent years this stage has played host to a throng of new talent such as Scouting For Girls, The Subways and The Courteeners, as well as those who traverse the coolest of cult circuits such as Liz Green, Ralfe Band and Danny and The Champions of the World.

A little later in the year Jake was to be ‘tipped by the experts’ on the In The City conference website and now fresh from playing a handful of showcase gigs with the newly applauded Karima Francis, the chances are that this young man’s name will be the next to be whispered throughout the industry and beyond.
Within the country-groomed folk pop of Jake Flowers there lies a classic simplicity that will transcend the test of time. Dressed in country tweeds he performs with an acoustic guitar, a strong vocal and a sole bass drum that together never fail to entice a crowd, certainly to silence and even on occasion to tears.
