Since 1999 Capsule has been instrumental in the transformation of Birmingham, Britain's Second City, from a cultural backwater to one of the most important ports-of-call on the international experimental music circuit. Champions of all things across the avant-garde spectrum, Capsule are curators, promoters and fans of the finest music, revealing the otherwise indescribable connections between contemporary music and art, crafting extraordinary events for adventurous audiences.

Organisers of the illustrious Festival are please to announce the first confirmations - including HEAD OF DAVID who bring their driving bombast to proceedings for the first time in 23 years - for this year’s festival, which will take place in Birmingham on 24TH - 26TH of July 2009.

Now in it’s 7th year, the event will once again take place at the Custard Factory utilising the many rooms for music, art and film.

Additional confirmations will follow in the upcoming weeks, but the line-up is shaping up to be another extravaganza - the rather incredible former Swan, JARBOE; the expansive drone-noise of GROWING; Brighton’s prog adventure, DIAGONAL; the wild avant futuristic jazz of ZU; the stoned pysch of EARTHLESS, the Virginian sludge rock of PONTIAK, the industrial experiments of 65 DAYS OF STATIC, the immense duo that is FLOWER/CORSANO DUO, KHYAM ALLAMI and THEO will be featured in the line-up, once again highlighting the highly eclectic booking policy of the festival organisers.

Tickets go on sale early March from: TheTicketSellers
Further info on artists/hotel deals etc from: Capsule - Supersonic

"Supersonic, in our opinion the best festival in the world right now" Rock-A-Rolla Magazine

"As British music festivals go, Birmingham’s annual Supersonic event is the best kind of mixed musical bag, a dizzying assortment of avant rock textures and Heavy Metal thunder on a bill which swings from the sublime to the ridiculous without once seeming ostentatiously eclectic." NEW ADDITIONS!

SUPERSONIC organisers have confirmed more acts for this year’s extravaganza with Skullflower, Scorn and Atomized now on the bill!

Skullflower

To the uninitiated, Skullflower is one of the more prominent bands from the early 1980s power-electronics / noise scene, and one of the few to achieve any real recognition outside their homeland, especially in the United States and retained just enough of rock's basic structure to attract the attention of people beyond the power-electronics genre.

Scorn

Scorn is the project of former Napalm Death drummer Mick Harris. The band was formed in the early '90s by Harris along with Nic Bullen (one of the founding members of Napalm Death in 1981). Bullen left the group in April 1995 and the projects continues on to this day as an essentially one man show.

Atomized

Atomized is the what occurs when you combine the tribal percussion and bellows of Lovely Feyde Rautha (Russell McEwan of Black Sun) and the electronic-vocal attack of Lea Cummings (Kylie Minoise) as they reinterpret some well known pop songs from the 80s, or as they describe - "Raped versions of pop classics by Madonna, Visage, Howard Jones, Haircut 100, & Culture Club." As you can imagine, the songs sound nothing like the original chart toppers, dwelling in a nocturnal grey area between Mummy and Daddy era-Whitehouse (especially on their Madonna and Visage cover) and Swans at their minimal best.
KOVOROX SOUND

"Of this welter of well organised, wisely curated festivals (ATP, Faster Than Sound, Sonar, Greenman) perhaps the best organised and most wisely curated was Supersonic. Plotted by Birmingham promoters Capsule, 2007's Supersonic inhabited the nexus where metal, folk and noise met." Plan B Magazine

Corrupted(Japan)
Corrupted::Top
Corrupted from Osaka Japan THE absolute reference in terms of monolithic and experimental funeral doom. The band has become legendary: consistently refusing interviews and photo shoots, the band has only been seen in Europe during a discreet tour in 2000 and a couple of appearances last year, this will be their first show in the UK.
Corrupted’s music is bleak, monumental and slow as a pachyderm… Extraordinary brutal riffs-drones played in a very low guitar/bass duo, as well as a drummer who maintains a brontosaurus like striking force on improbable slow tempos serve as a morbid box for a singer with an inimitable tone: guttural and abysmal at will, he declaims apocalyptic texts in Spanish (!!!). The band sometime uses long instrumental, melancholic breaks that admirably contrast with the force of their sound.

Thorr's Hammer (US)
THORR’S HAMMER on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads
Greg Anderson & Stephen O’Malley presents their maiden voyage into darkeness: the cult recordings by the black doom act THORR”S HAMMER. Thorr’s Hammer is raw nihilistic doom featuring the unbelievable vocals of Norwegian goddess Ozma. Presented in her native Norwegian tongue, Ozma’ gutteral dark vocals are contrasted by beautiful singing creating a huanting atmosphere. Funeral dirge is provided by the collaberation of Stephen O’Malley (ex-Burning Witch/SUNN0)))) and Greg Anderson (ex-Engine Kid/SUNN0)))/Goatsnake). Jamie Sykes (ex-Burning WitchWardrums, ex-CODENAME F.A.D.G.E.) and Guy Pinhas (Beaver, The Obsessed, Goatsnake, Melvins, etc) (Subharmonics). This union is raw, low and heavy as fuck, reminiscent of elder gods HELLHAMMER/CELTIC FROST,SABBATH, AND VENOM. The material contains the original three demo tracks (from 1995) and a recently unearthed live recording (”Mellom Galgene”) all originally created in the stoned winter of 1994-1995….. grim melancholy.

Arbouretum(US)
ARBOURETUM on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads
Arbouretum hail from Baltimore and are led by Dave Heumann, who also plays with Nathan Bell of Lungfish in Human Bell. They use the basic structure of folk-affected rock songs to paint broad landscapes rich with literary allusions, loner ballads, fuzzy bass and acid drenched guitar solos. Arbouretum released their Thrill Jockey debut, Rites of Uncovering, which has been called “the best doom-folk record of all time” and since have toured Europe and the States multiple times, including outings with Dead Meadow and Beach House, Boredoms.

THE ACCUSED (US)
The ACCUSED on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads
Formed in 1981 in Oak Harbor, Washington by bassist Chibon ‘Chewy’ Batterman, Dana Collins and guitarist Tom Niemeyer. John Dahlin was the vocalist from 1982-1984. The addition of Blaine Cook (frontman of Seattle hardcore punk group The Fartz) fit nicely into the group’s migration towards a more heavy metal-based sound. In 1984, The band dubbed their style “splatter rock,” in homage to their favorite genre of horror films. Their hybrid musical formula was distinguishable by Blaine’s unusual choking-sound vocals, Niemeyer’s muted, choppy, buzzsaw guitars, dark metallic riffs, and rapid-fire drumming. The band are also responsible for creating the wild, zombie mascot Martha Splatterhead, whose likeness (created by Niemeyer) adorns most of their albums and many of their promotional items. The Accused recorded five albums, three EPs, and over 100 songs between their 1981 inception and 1990s hiatus.
The current line-up consists of Brad Mowen (also a member of Master Musicians of Bukakke and former member of Burning Witch and Asva), Dorando Hodous (also a member of Lesbian), Mike Peterson and Niemeyer.

Pram (UK)
Pram on MySpace Music - Free Streaming MP3s, Pictures & Music Downloads
The second city’s spin cycle of perpetual renovation, from the slum clearances to its current cosmetic upgrade, is etched in Pram’s restless groove, an endearing and gently refusenik mix encircling early Rough Trade innovators The Raincoats, astro jazz, sci-fi soundtracks, creepy Victoriana, tropical analogue and tumbledown funk.

FESTIVAL UPDATE

11th May 2009

"Of this welter of well organised, wisely curated festivals (ATP, Faster Than Sound, Sonar, Greenman) perhaps the best organised and most wisely curated was Supersonic. Plotted by Birmingham promoters Capsule, 2007's Supersonic inhabited the nexus where metal, folk and noise met." Plan B Magazine

"Supersonic, in our opinion the best festival in the world right now" Rock-A-Rolla Magazine

”AS British music festivals go, Birmingham’s annual Supersonic event is the best kind of mixed musical bag, a dizzying assortment of avant rock textures and Heavy Metal thunder on a bill which swings from the sublime to the ridiculous without once seeming ostentatiously eclectic. The Wire

Capsule are delighted to have confirmed some more amazing additions to this years Supersonic Festival line up, which include the unruly trio MONOTONIX, the enchanting ROSE KEMP and the sublime REMEMBER REMEMBER as well as the multi talented Norwegian electronic musician, graphic designer, illustrator filmmaker KIM HIORTHøY (Kim will be both performing and showing some of his films at this years festival).

In collaboration with Birmingham Jazz, Supersonic are proud to be hosting an exclusive UK performance by drum maverick BOBBY PREVITE, who will be presenting his unique project DAILED IN, joined by VJ Benton-C Bainbridge creating a live improvised audio visual experience. A prolific performer New Yorker Previte has played concert venues such a Lincoln Center and the New York EMPAC. Previte triggers every sound with live- no loops, no laptops and no overdubbing. VJ Benton-C paints with light, spilling off the screen and onto the performers. Using obsolete and forgotten technology scavenged from the tech dump, Benton-C warps video into strange shapes not seen since Electric Company, while Previte whips sonic fragments into powerful songs.

This eclectic project will have you mesmerised and their performance at Supersonic 2009 will be the only UK date.

*Tim Wright - A/V performance

Tim Wright is a musician, composer and video artist based in York. He is perhaps best known as a producer of peculiarly individual electronic dance music released under his own name and the pseudonym Tube Jerk. His music has been released by some of the key labels in the field including Tresor, Novamute, Sativae and GPR. His recordings in the early 1990s as Germ for GPR are considered to have been pioneering in the then nascent IDM scene. Innovative and uncompromising, surreal and often disorientating, Germ offered glimpses of possible musical futures which have never been fully realised. In recent years Tim has in some respects returned to his experimental roots and has been exploring generative and algorithmic approaches to audio visual composition.

The Wire
