If you were lucky enough to catch Buraka Som Sistema's DJ/MC show during their mini tour last October, you'll already be familiar with their hybrid of kuduro, hip-hop, grime and hard-edged dance music – a kind of polyglottal, multicultural, globalized ghetto funk. You may also have caught the video for “Sound of Kuduro” featuring MIA, which was one of Pitchfork's top picks for 2008.
But starting mid-April, North America will get its first true introduction to this band, who have already been playing to packed rooms and at sold out festivals from Rio to Roskilde to their hometown of Lisbon. Buraka will be kicking off a ten-date tour at Coachella with their explosive multi-decked live show, involving physics-defying dance troupes, serious percussion and rotating rapid-fire MCs. This is a show not to be missed, as escalating infamy is set to erupt into worldwide domination.
Buraka Som Sistema’s full-length debut, Black Diamond, comes out on April 7, 2009 on Fabric.
The video for “Kalemba (Wegue Wegue)” shows a taste of what’s to come. Check it out below.
**Electro-indie superstars Hot Chip also lent their talents to a remix of the song!Download it here.**
