West Coast’s premiere independent celebration of music, film and art
San Francisco, CA - The 17th annual Noise Pop Festival, presented in part by Wolfgang’s Vault, begins tonight in San Francisco with a free opening night party at Mezzanine, a special Antony and the Johnsons show and an installment of City Arts & Lectures’ Talking Music Series with John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats in conversation with author Tobias Wolff – and that’s just the first night.
Noise Pop, the West Coast’s premiere independent celebration of music, film and art and will take place today, February 24 through March 1, 2009 at venues throughout San Francisco, CA and feature headliners including legendary singer / songwriter Bob Mould, Stephen Malkmus, Josh Ritter (solo with a string quartet), the Mountain Goats (solo), A.C. Newman, Sleepy Sun, French Kicks, Matt Costa, Thao Nguyen, Martha Wainright, Goblin Cock, From Monument to Masses, Thee Oh Sees, Kool Keith, Mike Relm, St Vincent, The Morning Benders, The Submarines, Ra Ra Riot, Dear And The Headlights, Port O’Brien, The Matches, Themselves, Portugal. The Man, Clues, Sholi, Flosstradamus, N.A.S.A., No Age and Les Savy Fav.
Industry Noise will feature an opening keynote conversation with Fat Mike from the successful punk band NOFX and label Fat Wreck Chords. The closing keynote will be a special conversation between Lou Barlow (Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh, Folk Implosion) and Bob Mould (Hüsker Dü, Sugar). Industry Noise will also include panel discussions that encourage conversation between the digital music industries and the artists that are forging new terrain through its opportunities.
In total, over 100 of the best independent bands out right now will take to the stage at more than 40 events. Noise Pop also includes a film festival that includes Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison, Gogol Bordello Non-Stop: A Gypsy Punk Documentary and Ashes Of American Flags. This year’s festival also includes gallery art openings showcasing works by Lauren Dukoff, Mark Mothersbaugh, John Vanderslice and Alissa Anderson, plus “Pop ‘n’ Shop” – Noise Pop’s take on the local indie designer trunk sale and rock poster show.
