Yorkshire indie starlets Pigeon Detectives opened the inaugural event in 2007 to a rapturous response. It was the only time the band would play a set at midday as their incorrigible appetite for releasing rousing pop anthems and playing adrenalin fueled shows soon propelled them into the mainstream and garnered a loyal army of pigeon fanciers. As a token of their affection the band are coming out of the studio to headline an exclusive festival show at Underage, a real coup for the event.
The supporting cast are all new to the Underage festival and comprise an exhilaratingly eclectic and dynamic tag team. New Zealand’s electro pop queen LadyHawke has delivered some of the most evocative, shimmering pop gems of 2008 and is the anthesis to illigemet Prodigy offspring Hadouken! whose rave anthems will generate mayhem in the moshpit.
Having experienced the Underage phenomenon first hand at the Christmas special, Metronomy couldn’t wait to sign up for the summer spectacular and further galvanize the kids with their wonky electronica. Sheffield whippersnappers Rolo Tomassi’s punk / hardcore attack, Esser’s reggae-tinged indie-rock, Tinchy Stryder’s dub-disco and Radio 1’s pioneer of rock and rave Kissy Sell Out playing live completes the second tier of musical upstarts with more innovative and adventurous additions to be added in the forthcoming weeks.
A whole host of audacious upstarts compliment this list of bolshy reprobates including melodic synth pop from Artrocker cover stars Rosie and the Goldbug whilst NME tipped The Chapman Family, formed just over a year ago in the north of England deliver a set of driving, jagged, raw guitars, twisted humour and punchy pop that recalls an early Maximo Park.
Underage Festival continues to distance itself from more grown up music festivals and provide the nation’s youth with an extravagant musical playground.
