Altsounds - Union Square Music announce the imminent release of “The Crobar Vol One”

Union Square Music are pleased to announce the imminent release of “The Crobar Vol One” on the 13th April 2009. The first in a series of albums that celebrate the most quintessential rock bar in the UK (if not the world!) by drawing together two CDs of their favourite tunes…

Crobar owners Steve and Rich met in the mid 90s while running Soho’s Borderline club. Their mutual love of Metal led to them hosting shows by Pearl Jam, Rage Against The Machine and Kyuss among many others. For their hard work and effort they won the Time Out Venue of the year award in 2000. They left the Borderline in January 2001. Unemployed and wondering what to do with their first Friday night off in years, the boys met up in Soho and went looking for a good bar and a fun time, only to discover that the London’s West End had nothing to offer a couple of head bangers with a positive attitude and money to spend except a bad reception, warm beer and shit music. That night, thanks to lukewarm draught Carling and Kylie Minogue, The Crobar was born.

For the next 3 months the boys begged, stole and borrowed every penny they could get their hands on, then set about finding a bar for sale. As luck would have it (or the Gods of Metal decreed it), Rich got a phone call at the perfect time, asking him if he knew anybody who wanted to buy a bar. On the 1st July 2001 The Crobar went from a dream to a reality….. to a nightmare. Their only customer that first day called herself Crazy Jane! Despite this scary start, the boys persevered and soon word spread that Soho had a new late night bar that liked, welcomed and catered for the long haired, the tattooed and the musically disenfranchised.

Since then, The Crobar has gone from strength to strength, brutalizing the livers of the famous and the infamous alike. Over the last 8 years there have been a million memorable moments (many unfit for print and even more that are very hazy) but top of the list is being asked by Dave Grohl to host the Foo Fighters’ aftershow party at Wembley Stadium on Richard’s Birthday.

What does the future hold? There are plans afoot to open more Crobars but in the meantime, there will be many more nights of Heavy Metal drunken mayhem… and more Crobar albums. GUARANTEED!

“The Crobar Vol One” is a 28 track compilation of some of the finest metal and rock courtesy of the Crobar’s legendary jukebox. From classic acts such as Lynyrd Skynyrd, Judas Priest, and ZZ Top to a raft of contemporary favourites such as The Answer, Down and Probot. From thrash (Sacred Reich’s classic “Surf Nicaragua”) to Kyuss’ stoner rock (“Demon Cleaner”), from Motörhead’s staple “No Class” to the doom sounds of Cathedral’s “Corpsecycle”, and from the classic “Under My Wheels” (Alice Cooper) to seminal Alice In Chains track “Dam That River”, this is the ideal soundtrack to the perfect night out – or in.
