Some news and announcements from ROSE ELINOR DOUGALL (formerly of The Pipettes) on her forthcoming new single, ATP newest signings SLEEPY SUN and another Rose, THE JESSIE ROSE TRIP...
On the Easter weekend at one of our favourite London venues Brixton's Windmill, we discovered exactly what ROSE ELINOR DOUGALL has been up to since her debut single earlier this year - whipping her new band The Distractions into shape! Live, it couldn't be further musically from her former band. The Distractions build a fuzz filled, hard rocking psychadelic wall of sound around Rose's well-crafted pop songs. They look really cool too. So, seems like the ideal time to tell you about her new single, Start/Stop/Synchro:
Start/Stop/Synchro will be released on limited, coloured vinyl through Elefant Records Singles Club on June 8th 2009. Again produced and fleshed out by Rose along with producer Lee Baker in his Brighton studio, Start/Stop/Synchro is taken from Rose’s almost completed, upcoming debut album, ‘Without Why’.
If Another Version Of Pop Song (her debut release, Guardian Guide Single of the Week) was a step away from the past. Start/Stop/Synchro sees Rose entering into a bright new beginning. Cinematic, minor key melodies, spiralling guitars, glacial keys, strings and a propulsive beat cast a brisk but not bristly sheen over a buoyant structure, transforming the original demo into a fully formed pop song. B-Side, Static Saturday unavailable elsewhere sees Rose blending her love of My Bloody Valentine, Broadcast and The Cocteau Twins into her own three minutes of bliss.
Since the last single, Rose and her band of Distractions have been busy playing gigs all around the UK supporting the likes of British Sea Power, Jesca Hoop and Chairlift, headlining shows of their own, whilst finding time to fit in sessions for Marc Riley, John Kennedy and Huw Stephens along the way. More dates to coincide with the release of Start/Stop/Synchro will be announced soon, but for now you can check her out at in the capital here:

And from one Rose to another, we're all very excited here in Manchester about the release of THE JESSIE ROSE TRIP's (http://www.myspace.com/thejessierosetrip) debut single 'Forever and a Day' set to drop May 4th on New Music Club. To celebrate, they'll be playing a double single launch party in both the north and the south. A full four-piece, but lead by one of the most compelling and stylish frontwomen we've seen around these parts in a good while, Jessie Rose. Taking inspiration from Hendrix to Nina Simone, this is one girl who has her head screwed on right and this track's a reggae-tinged stomper bursting with percussion, organ and incredibly powerful vocals. In fact, NME just said
"If 2009 is going to be the year of Florence and the Machine, it should by rights be Jessie’s too. Taking a pinch from Amy (nod-worthy soul-warbles), Kate (a slew of impressively quirky piano-led ditties) and Florence herself (dresses from a drama prop cupboard), she still got enough mad-eyed individuality to make colourful waves of her own."
May 6th - MANCHESTER The Ruby Lounge
May 7th -LONDON Notting Hill Arts Club
In other news, to celebrate the May 11th release of debut album 'Embrace', ATP's latest signing SLEEPY SUN will be headlining the label's upcoming showcase at the intimate London Luminaire on May 12th. Support comes from ATP/R artist Alexander Tucker and his band The Decomposed Orchestra, and Fuck Buttons will also play a special DJ set. Tickets are on sale now from http://www.wegottickets.com
The San Francisco based psych rock band have been gaining massive acclaim since SXSW. Some things people have said about them;
"With the rumble of Grinderman, the freakiness of Amazing Baby and the psych hellishness of Black Mountain" NME
"More hot new psych from the environs of San Francisco. This lot flip between freakouts and desolation blues like a cross between Jefferson Airplane and Dead Meadow." UNCUT
They're an intense sextet, a band that demand your attention, whether droning madly, spiralling into cascades of infinitely echoing vocals, or kicking back with their blissed-out take on classic Americana rock. The album was produced by Colin Stewart - Black Mountain, Pink Mountaintops and Pretty Girls Make Graves and its the sound of West Coast psychedelia updated for the late noughties which should give you a good idea of what to expect - as well as drawing inspiration from Black Sabbath, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Can and Creation Records...
May 7th - LONDON Rough Trade (In Store)
May 8th - MINEHAED ATP festival
May 11th - COVENTRY The Tuns
May 12th - LONDON Luminaire - ATP Showcase!
