‘Oh Minnows’ was originally conceived and developed by singer Chris Steele Nicholson over recent years of travel. Written and recorded while traversing the USA and UK, after his other musical outlet, critically acclaimed psyche pop trio ‘Semifinalists’ went on hiatus.
The acutely intimate ’Might’ was finally compiled, mixed and mastered in seclusion upon his return to his home town of Chicago Illinois. With the preparation and production of the songs on Oh Minnows debut release being so deeply personal, the US singer decided to play every instrument on the single, to guarantee the final product turned out the way he intended.
The ambient title track ‘Might’ floats on a bed of carefully laid down synths, with Chris’ hushed vocals complimenting the dreamy melody to astonishing effect, while ‘Version 2’ is a more urgent little number that builds towards an epic crescendo, screeching in at just under 2 minutes long. The final track on the EP ‘Dear’ is an acoustic lead lullaby, which ends with a harsh but welcome wake-up call, just in time for you to play back all 3 tracks once again.
Chris grew up very near the Great Lakes, where being in and around the water was forced upon the residents of the area. On the naming of his new incarnation “The first form of aquatic life that greets you in this tenuous situation are these schools of Minnows” he reminisces. “I‘ve always admired them for their handsome appearance and strong sense of community”.
The thoroughly absorbing ‘Might’ EP serves as the perfect introduction to this intriguing new act and 2009 looks on course to be the year of the Minnow………
Oh Minnows plan to tour the UK later this year and will be over to promote the release of the ‘Might’ EP in June.
