If you know and love avant-garde jazz, you'll no doubt know and love the music of Ornette Coleman. From pretty much the start of his career onwards he has been renowned for his unorthdox alto sax style, playing a plastic instrument, preferring to explore "the cracks" of scales and to avoid verse-chorus-verse structures.
If you know and love alternative rock, you'll no doubt know and love the music of countless musicians influenced by Coleman. Clearly-defined lines can be drawn from his playing style to Lou Reed's use of feedback on the first VU albums to Sonic Youth to infinity and beyond.
In other words, if you're not already excited by the news that the Ornette Coleman-curated Meltdown festival is little over two months away, the following confirmed musicians performing at the event should do it:
- The Roots
- Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band featuring Sean Lennon, Cornelius & special guests
- The Freewheeling Yo La Tengo
- Patti Smith & The Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra
- Ornette Coleman + Master Musicians of Jajouka
Tickets are on sale from Thursday 30 April at 10am.
