New Cass McCombs Video Features Legendary Actress Karen Black

First Video From McCombs' Catacombs Album To Be Released On July 7 On Domino Records

In the words of Aaron Brown, director:

"It was really inspiring working with friends and collaborators which allowed for a lot to happen in a little amount time, and to try out different ideas inspired by our original script. Karen, of course, was an inspiration and joy and has a spectacular camera presence that she carries wherever she goes. I hope the video makes people want to listen to the song a lot, it's both deep and playful and I hope the video adds a third dimension to form some kind of trinity. We listened to that song about 50 times that day and I like it more than ever."

Filmed entirely at the Phoenix Theater in Petaluma, CA, the idea for the video was based on characters from an original screenplay written by McCombs and director Brown. Brown himself playing a "Demiurge", a supernatural being that controls time and space, as well as the actions of McCombs, Ms. Black and certain teenagers, nefariously making skaters fall from their boards at will, etc. His tools are: a video editing station, a synthesizer, an obsidian 'scrying' stone, and a nautical astrolabe. Ms. Black's character is presented as perhaps a creation of Brown's imagination, that is, his very own "Dreams-Come-True-Girl"

Karen Black is the legendary Academy Award-nominated actress, whose beautiful singing voice has been featured in several movies including 'Five Easy Pieces' (1970) and 'Nashville' (1975). A montage of her films can be seen here:

Throughout the video, McCombs himself plays the role of troubadour, a tradition sadly fading. Perhaps he is one of the Demiurge's creations as well? Perhaps the Demiurge created the music as a gesture to entertain his lovely woman? The video never goes so far to explain, yet is seen through the eyes of the Demiurge: his joys, his improvisation, his madness, all as creator of this "punk" microcosmos.

"Dreams-Come-True-Girl" is an attempt at a new kind of love song. The length of the bridge and electric guitar solo alone demonstrate musical innovation. The overall message is that of love and hope, and possibly a prophesy to a deeper understanding, wrapped together in a rock-and-roll template.
