At the end of 2008 21 year old Elly Jackson, aka La Roux, arrived with a whirlwind of excitement surrounding her. Confirming all the hype - she bagged a top 5 single, the support slot on Lily Allen’s national tour, has been part of the biggest remix of this year (Skream’s Let’s Get Ravey Remix) and has everyone from Franz Ferdinand to Daft Punk hailing her as a talent to watch. Now, with her number 2 single ‘In For The Kill’ still climbing the charts almost 6 weeks after release, the iconic redheaded Brixton girl unleashes her highly anticipated debut album.
The self-titled LP is a kaleidoscope of emotions, touching on everything from heartbreak to disappointment to invincibility – all in true spine tingling La Roux measures that create an instant resonance. With former singles ‘Quicksand’ and ‘In For The Kill’ still sounding fresh as a daisy, future single ‘Bulletproof’ is a stone cold smash in waiting and marks the start of the summer. Ranging from the high crystal-clean falsettos of ‘Fascination’ to the brooding lulls of ballad ‘Cover My Eyes’ (that features London Community Gospel Choir), the breadth of the album and La Roux’s diversity is clear.
After storming club stages with her live show in February (including a month residency @ London hot spot YOYO) La Roux has been embraced by a sea of night owls. However for Elly and co-producer/ writer Ben Langmaid, La Roux (French for ‘the red haired one’) has never been about producing disposable dance floor fodder. Since meeting four years ago the talented duo’s goal was clear - they wanted to bring classic songwriting back into the clubs and charts, and with this album they’ve accomplished that and far more.
