Los Angeles based Army Navy craft impeccable melodies over layers of guitar fuzz that creates a delicate balance between melancholy and joyful resignation. When writing, the band looks to groups from the past such as Teenage Fanclub, The Smiths, Big Star and The Zombies for inspiration, but with singer Justin Kennedy’s unique delivery they’ve furnished a sound that’s all their own. Aided in the studio by producer Adam Lasus (Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Helium, Yo La Tengo), Army Navy’s debut UK single Saints is out on July 20th through Club Fandango. This single will be followed by their full length album Army Navy later this year along with a full tour of Europe. The debut LP from the four-piece blends chiming 60’s pop under blankets of guitars with hints of new wave and Motown, creating a set of absolutely irresistible pop tunes. Saints is no exception – all sunshine doused West-Coast harmonies, melodious riffs and Lemonheads thrashy guitars. Its poppier B-side Get Right Back (Where We Started From) is full of punchy rhythms reminiscent of Elvis Costello. Army Navy was born in the bedroom of frontman Justin Kennedy, who in his early days played with Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie) in Seattle’s Pinwheel. Having relocated to Los Angeles after Pinwheel broke up, Kennedy immediately began focusing on his new project and started assembling members for Army Navy – guitarist Louie Schultz and bassist Ben Gaffin joined swiftly after hearing Kennedy’s music but the trio found it difficult finding the right drummer. Having not found a permanent sticks man at the time of recording, Army Navy’s album boasts drumming by the legendary Pete Thomas of Elvis Costello and The Attractions, who had been a longtime fan of the band. Army Navy eventually found their drummer and fourth member in Douglas Randall. With a firm lineup and an explosive live show, the quartet is beginning to attract a steady following and not just in the States. They played a successful set of shows at this year’s SXSW festival and have already shared the stage with Arctic Monkeys, The Soft Pack, Cut Copy and Teenage Fanclub. Their album gained critical acclaim when it was released in the United States and Saints is likely is to do the same when released here later this summer.
