New artist Mapei announces debut EP

 Mapei: 24-year-old rapper that every producer or artist along the way has fallen in love with (Mehdi, Rawkus, Spank Rock, Switch, Gostface Killah, Count & Sinden Carli, and Basutbudet to name but a few). Her music defies easy categorization - echoes of hip-hop, club music, electro, punk, pop, folk, r&b and rock. It’s music that is literally worldly - forged through life experience and travels that are uniquely her own. But no matter what the style, Mapei has a bedrock of soul that infuses every note she creates, and it’s the soul in her music that has made her one of the hottest new artists around; attracting some of new music’s most inventive artists and world class producers in the process. The Cocoa Butter Diaries EP is due for release via Alt Delete records this June. Three parts hip hop one part booty bass, all distinctive high flow rap and smart lyrics. Lead EP track Public Enemy’s hard, fast booty bass that’ll be smashing up the clubs in no time, the other three tracks display big hooks, 80s beats, hints of crunk, sickeningly neat rhymes notably Bringing the Heat, All the Children on Crack, whilst the set to be classic Leader of the Pack - (it was the first thing recorded after having an operation) whichcame out of an operation on Mapei’s vocal chords that forced her to be silent for two months. The return saw her with this, an effortlessly hypnotic, hooky record recorded in Paris in 2008. It put her on the map as an artist in her own right, and led to her signing by Downtown Records (Justice, Santogold, Spank Rock, Mos Def and Cold War Kids). Live, she is incendiary. As she now records and readies her debut album for a 2009 release, Mapei is clear about what she’s trying to produce. “I’m looking to create a new way of doing soul,” she declares. She continues, “What I’ve done in the songs I’ve recorded is talk the dichotomy between the sweetness and happiness of my home, and the darkness and violence of my immediate surroundings in Providence. I’ve seen people throw their lives away, and I get how fortunate I’ve been to get out of that. I’ve gone through so many different worlds, and this album is going to be reflective of all the chapters of my life.”
Mapei is currently in the process of recording an album that is sure to establish her as a special artist creating something unique and very exciting. For now - enjoy this small taste of things to come.
