Last year the hugely press-shy Memory Cassette aka Weird Tapes released material for free via his myspace page and it proliferated super quickly across the cooler American blogs. Memory Cassette was the dreamy, psychedelic electronica and Weird Tapes was more driving, fizzy French sounding electro. Both identities figured highly in the Tips for 2009 online.
Having this dual life with two separate identities proved cumbersome so they were merged under one name, MEMORY TAPES.
In January, Memory Tapes, decided to shelve all the hugely tipped (and brilliant) music, although some came out subsequently on various labels around the world (Acephale, Something In Construction, Sincerely Yours).
Instead work was started on the debut album, and this is the first release of that material. It is very modern-sounding and seductively exotic electronica (called Dreamwave, according to Gorilla vs Bear) that also clearly carries a torch for Eno, Moroder, and New Order. Neither scared to be beautiful nor worried about hurrying, this is impressive and impressionistic music, aimed as much at the head and the heart as the feet.
Many other acts have noticed the rise of Memory Tapes and asked for remixes. Recent recipients include YeahYeahYeahs, Digitalism and Britney Spears, and Memory Tapes has been remixed by London’s Friend among others.
MEMORY TAPES A LIMITED EDITION 12”: BICYCLE / PLAIN MATERIAL / BiCYCLE (Horrors Mix) RELEASED BY LOOG ON AUGUST 17TH
Faris from The Horrors heard the music online and urged former label Loog to sign them. This has resulted in this limited single release and The Horrors Cosmic Dub remix of Bicycle, which is already picking up advance orders in New York, Paris, Tokyo.
