The Twilight Sad step up a gear towards the release of their sophomore ‘Forget The Night Ahead’ album with the release of a brand new single ‘I Became Prostitute’ - the first frormatted release from the new record - on August 3rd. It’s backed with non-album track ‘In The Blackout’. The band previewed new songs on both sides of the Atlantic back in May with US dates supporting Mogwai, and UK headline dates including heart-stoppingly intense – and intensely loud - performances at three Stag & Dagger events, and two Great Escape appearances. Album opener, ‘Reflection Of The Television’ also dropped on Pitchfork around the same time, signalling the band’s return.
Devastating shows at the ICA at the start of July (headlining FatCat's night at 'Independent's Week') and at T In The Park a week later helped promote the band, in the minds of many, as leaders of the pack of a new breed of British noise bands, and there is another opportunity to catch the band live on Wednesday 5th August at The Lexington before they head back to the USA with labelmates We Were Promised Jetpacks and Brakes, returning for a nationwide UK tour in October.
In lyrical terms the new album is possibly a darker set even than it’s hallowed predecessor ‘Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters’, singer James Graham’s portentous knack for unsettling lines, forcefully delivered, and Andy MacFarlane's tremelo-ed avalanche of guitar remaining very much on point. Musically too, the forthcoming record is no less tumultuous, weaving between startling melancholy and tightly coiled tension, it’s cacophony broadening to accommodate the band’s most melodic and also thrillingly discordant moments yet.
