After making great strides with their debut single ‘The Slacker’ (Steve Lamacq’s ‘Alternative Single of the Week’) and with their Mark Gardener (Ride) produced self-titled debut album turning the heads of an ever growing and devoted fan base (recently inspiring roaring adulation from an otherwise savvy and self-consciously sophisticated crowd at a Diesel U Music event), Bastila are primed to release ‘Ghosts’, a stand-out track set to build on this groundswell and see them capture the acclaim, ears and hearts of an still larger audience.
‘Ghosts’, a beautifully crafted and poignant record, layers soft, hypnotic vocals over clear and yearning guitar, show-casing lead guitarist Adam Clark’s impressive skills to the maximum. Teasing influences hint at psychedelic roots in the likes of Pink Floyd and The Beta Band and indie ancestry from the Stone Roses and Gomez, whilst a more shoe-gazing heritage is suggested with echoes of the Jesus and Mary Chain and producer Mark Gardener’s own band Ride, but none of these references do justice to the unique sound of this precocious band.
It’s no wonder that Beyond The Wizard Sleeve’s Richard Norris jumped at the opportunity to remix the track under his new The Time & Space Machine alias. It lends itself perfectly to his otherworldly psychedelic stylings and the resulting epic ‘Summer of Love’ remix has already won many fans and found itself a coveted spot on FACT Magazine’s website player.
‘Ghosts’ has also been remixed for this release by Sunday Best’s own in-house producer-boy-wonder, who adds strings and layers the vocals to spellbinding effect.
Bastila took their name from a table football bar in Brno in the Czech Republic that the band haunted for the whole of a fateful holiday. They signed to Rob da Bank’s Sunday Best label after suitably impressing the governor at a Bestival local band competition.
The band members peer from the cover of their eponymous debut album that artist-designer Toby Whitebread has riffed on Love’s classic ‘Forever Changes’ cover art. The music within bursts with colour and sunshine, from the gypsy-flecked stomp of debut single ‘The Slacker’ to the unexpected Floydian guitar freak-out of ‘Ghosts’, via a host of other flavours, from infectious ska-pop stylings and flamenco guitars, to militant marching beats and brass led wig-outs, the album fuses the most unlikely of ingredients conjuring the joyful spirit of a knees up in the sun.
