Vancouver breakouts Japandroids is a two piece band that originally started as a creative outlet for the post-teenage angst of Brian King and David Prowse. Originally intended to be a trio, the boys decided to forgo the logistical nightmare of having a 'lead singer' and do it themselves. Currently on their first full North American tour and on the bill for the Pitchfork Music Festival in July, Japandroids have set tongues wagging in North America with the release of two critically acclaimed EPs and a bunch of explosive live shows since appearing at last year’s CMJ in New York. Having signed to Polyvinyl (home to of Montreal amongst others), Japandroids forthcoming debut album 'Post-Nothing' is a bedlam of riotous garage rock that thunders past in a fit of youthful nostalgia. Like a half-way house between The Sonics and Mclusky, Japandroids fuse together lo-fi production with punk’s spittle-flecked velocity, and by adding a hell of a lot of hooks create eight fast-paced, fuzzed-out power anthems. What marks Japandroids out from other guitar/drums duos is their rip-roaring melodies are never compromised by the band’s visceral energy and lo-fi production. Their carefree abandon is captured in its rawest intensity on Young Hearts Spark Fire as the lyrics are yelled with conviction: “We used to dream/ Now we worry about dying/ I don’t want to worry about dying / I just want to worry about sunshine girls”. Brian King plays broad chords stewed in mid-90s haze while David Prowse frantically slays the drums; they both add vocals and repeat the lyrics over and over to dizzying effect. With wild guitars, intense percussion and dual vocals, the duo never seem like they are lacking in any department. They don't care what you call it, as long as it's not minimal. Japandroids are maximal - a two piece band trying to sound like a five piece band. Japandroids will be visiting the UK in October. More details to be announced soon. Tracks:

(excellently fuzzedout garage rock played as if at the apocalypse), but more impressively, they've mastered another secret to swaying the public: confidence without smugness.” - SPIN JAPANDROIDS on MySpace Music | |
