Joakim Bouazziz is one of the most influential figures in the French electronic music scene. He learned piano at age six with master concertist Abdel Rahman El Bacha, then came into contact with rock and electronic music and decided to plunge head-first into a career dedicated to fusing the two in a wholly original and frankly mind-blowing fashion . Having released two audacious albums on Versatile records, he's now moved to German label K7! for his first artist album as Joakim & The Disco: "Milky Ways". (Released 15th of September). Joakim & The Disco sees Joakim joined on stage by Mark Kerr on drums, Maxime Delpierre on guitar & Juan Deguillebon on bass. Tonight they will be performing tracks from "Milky Ways" for the first time in front of a London audience. And we can't bloody wait.
After tentative pre-teenage forays into cassette recorders and joke rap bands with friends, Kelpe devoted most of his teenage years to bone splintering skateboarding mishaps before deciding that loops and samples might provide him with a safer past time than trucks and wheels. Coming to the attention of DC Recordings in early 2003, his first release for label was the 12" EP ‘The People are Trying to Sleep', a wide eyed carnival of fractured beats and warped electronics. This was followed by the critically acclaimed album ‘Sea Inside Body' (September 2004) and most recently, by bedroom discotheque 12" ‘Sunburnt Eyelids' (October 2005). With influences ranging from the bleeps & bass of classic Warp artists to the spectral folk of John Renbourn, and the minimalism of Steve Reich to the percussive space-scapes of Do Make Say Think, the diversity of the music that inspires Kelpe finds reflection in his own sonic adventures.
On Dj duties tonight, the man himself, Joakim, will deliver his trademark set, accompanied by Dave from the Mercury nominated band The Invisible, Shoreditch circuit regular Nadia Ksaiba, weirdo music blog contributor 20jazzfunkgreats djs, and Joakim's label-mates Tigersushi djs.
