Commencing this fall, with new releases by Vic Chesnutt, Evangelista and Do Make Say Think, Constellation will for the first time make MP3 versions of the albums available directly from its own webshop.
There is a catch: the label's direct MP3 orders will be bundled with a limited edition, release-specific poster made especially for this purpose (and for inclusion in first pressings of the label's deluxe vinyl editions). Each poster will be printed using some combination of special printing techniques and fine recycled papers - the first three posters accompanying Constellation's Fall 2009 release, for example, include: a 3-colour silkscreen; a work by Jesse McCloskey offset printed on felt-finish paper; a 3-colour Risograph print. Each poster features artwork not found in any other aspect of the album art. Posters purchased as part of the MP3 bundle will be rolled and shipped in tubes.
Constellation is also introducing 'first pressings' of their usual high-quality 180 gram vinyl, in their usual high-quality thick cardstock jackets. First pressings will come with the limited edition poster - folded once and inserted in the LP jacket alongside the other album inserts the label would normally provide in its generally artwork-intensive vinyl editions. First pressings will also include a full CD copy of the album - uncompressed digital audio that the buyer can then extract, squeeze and squash as she sees fit. Constellation will not be doing MP3 donwload coupons in its LPs; preserving and providing hi-fidelity is the idea.

Reminder: Constellation CDs are still designed and packaged with the same love and care you have come to know and expect (and certainly deserve) - custom gatefold jackets on 100% recycled cardstock, with the CD itself in a nice thick inner sleeve, all hand-assembled, sealed in thick polyvinyl bags and stickered with bar-codes (so as to avoid printing those on the artwork/packaging itself) in the label's very own warehouse by people paid a living wage (no intern slave-labour!). Why do they do this? Because they are bleeding-heart Luddite fools who believe that even compact disc albums - not so long ago the generally accepted gold standard for accessible, durable, affordable hi-fidelity sound - can be made more interesting, worthy and resonant with some high-input, labour-intensive, artisanal, non-disposable attention and care.
