MULTI-PLATINUM selling Irish pop outfit THE BLIZZARDS have recorded a special one-off single inspired by the new book in the iconic Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series by bestselling Emerald Isle author Eoin Colfer.
And Another Thing…, the long-awaited sixth instalment in the increasingly inaccurately-named Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy ‘trilogy’, is being published by Penguin on October 12 – 30 years on from the publication of the first book by the late, great Douglas Adams.
To help mark the occasion, Mullingar five-piece The Blizzards have recorded a special track, also called And Another Thing…, to be released through Island Records this month.
And the band will be on hand to introduce Eoin Colfer by performing the single live at Hitchcon ‘09 – a unique day of celebration, spectacle and delight voyaging deep into the Hitchhiker’s universe in London on October 11.
Blizzards frontman Niall Breslin, whose band also release debut UK album Domino Effect on October 12, said being involved with the Hitchhiker’s phenomenon was ‘such an honour’.
“We have been massive fans for years and are delighted the Hitchhiker’s tradition is being continued by such an amazingly creative writer like Eoin Colfer,” he said.
“The quirkiness and oddities so prevalent in Hitchhiker’s and Eoin’s style have a symmetry with The Blizzards’ sound. Our parallel universes connected on an artistic level and we even drafted him in to play percussion on a space-age china tea set!”
And Another Thing… author Eoin Colfer said: “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy has always had a musical element. I wanted to keep this musical affiliation going so Penguin put out feelers to see if any contemporary acts were Hitchhiker’s fans.
“Quite a few were apparently, but when the list came back I read no further than the first name which was The Blizzards, one of Ireland’s biggest bands.
“Within nano-seconds it seemed Niall Breslin, The Blizzard’s singer/songwriter, and I were around a table being all esoteric about lyrics and stuff. The song And Another Thing… is going to be amazing and I am delighted to be associated with it.”
The 30th anniversary of Hitchhiker’s and the publication of Eoin’s book is a major cultural event and will be celebrated worldwide in various ways, including the Hitchcon ’09 celebration.
Penguin Books have joined forces with London’s Southbank Centre to create the October 11 event at Royal Festival Hall, which will feature an exclusive reading by Eoin from And Another Thing…, along with the live performance by The Blizzards.
