BEST COAST
Best Coast is an LA based pop duo combining Fuzzy low-fi guitars with amazing melodies. The release of cassette 'Where the boys are' has created quite a stir on the US blog circuit and deservedly so. The track 'The Sun Was High' is truly one of the best noise pop songs we've heard in a long while. Best Coast's first lady Bethany Cosentino also is a former member of Pocohaunted.
Made up of Robin Silas Christian (drums), John Arthur Webb (guitar & vocals) and Kevin Hendrick (bass and vocals), and rising from a flourishing DIY scene in their adopted hometown of Dalston, London, Male Bonding became a very real thing in May, 2008, with their first show, at an insane house party called “RAGE!” Male Bonding was born raging and it’s been non-stop ever since. That party evolved in to a split 7” release with PENS on Male Bonding’s own label Paradise Vendors Inc.PPM Allstars, Lovvers and Ponytail. The band has toured the UK with Brooklyn’s Vivian Girls and played shows with Lovvers, HEALTH, Fucked Up, Graffiti Island, Mika Miko, These are Powers, NISENNENMONDAI, Magik Markers, and Finally Punk among others. The trio recently got signed to Subpop. (which sold out in a week). To date, Male Bonding has dispatched seven releases including a Flipper tribute 7” (on Domino Records) alongside PPM Allstars, Lovvers and Ponytail. The band has toured the UK with Brooklyn’s Vivian Girls and played shows with Lovvers, HEALTH, Fucked Up, Graffiti Island, Mika Miko, These are Powers, NISENNENMONDAI, Magik Markers, and Finally Punk among others. Hospital Bombers
After the release of their critically acclaimed debut album 'Footnotes' in December 2007, Amsterdam based indie-folk band Hospital Bombers toured most of 2008, spreading their heartbreaking songs of love and decay through Holland, Spain, the UK, US & Canada. In their quest to entertain the broken hearted, 2009 marked the writing and recording of new material in lead singer Jan Schenk's studio Lijn 3 in Amsterdam. Armed with their favorite three chords, vocals, violin, drums, bass, philicorda and tambourine the band successfully continued where they left off: Writing amazing pop songs echoing the work of The Velvet Underground, The Mountain Goats and Raymond Carver. Two of those new songs will be released on 7" by Subbacultcha! on October 19th.

zZz
The Amsterdam-based duo, consisting of Björn Ottenheim and Daan Schinkel, was formed in 2001 and makes a remarkable mix of psychedelic electro wave, garage soul and dirty rock & roll. The sound of zZz is based on an old church organ and a simple drum kit, getting help and amplification from various electronic equipment. zZz' last album has received rave reviews in the UK press: Spin Magazines has described their music as "both innovating and captivating", NME called it "the dark oily afterbirth of organ-punk and "the electro-krautrock loons of zZz" even took Q-Magazine "by surprise". The band has built up a notorious live reputation by extensive worldwide touring with the artists like Fatboy Slim, Juliette & The Licks, Jarvis Cocker, Franz Ferdinand and The Happy Mondays. Their second album "Running With The Beast" was released in the fall off 2008 by Anti Records. The video for the first single of the new record "Grip" received the Award of "Best International Music Video" at the Music Video Festival in Aix-en-Provence, France.

Blondes
Kids these days! Between actual teenagers the Smith Westerns, barely legal the xx, and other promising young upstarts such as Pariah and Teengirl Fantasy, it seems like the median age for making compelling music is dropping fast. Add to that list Zach Steinman and Sam Haar of the electronic duo Blondes, two fresh-out-of-college dudes who started the project during a recent trip to Berlin. One of just a few tracks to trickle out from the group so far, the aerial slow-builder "Spanish Fly" displays a craft and restraint that belies their short years. The song begins tentatively, with a few vapory vocal samples that swim in and out of the mix, and as it progresses Blondes patiently unpeel more and more layers. A distant bass thud creeps in, synth pulses worm around, a mechanical, hollow drumbeat insinuates itself, and before you know it, the song reaches a woozy crescendo where just one more sound would be too many. Just then, Blondes dial it backwards, removing each instrument until only the beat remains. Poof, it's gone. You feel the sense of something washed over you, something that left too soon. You miss it. A neat trick in a way, but more than that a display of real compositional skill, which isn't something we typically equate with youth.

SURF CITY
Surf City is a young quartet from New Zealand. They used to be called "Kill Surf City," but there's an unfortunate band in England with the tag, so now the Jesus & Mary Chain reference isn't as obvious at first sight, though sonically, it remains. More than that, though, you'll hear the various jangling/darkish lo-fi pop bands of their homeland -- the Clean, Straightjacket Fits, the Terminals, the Chills. When we talk about Crystal Stilts, we say they have a kind of Flying Nun vibe -- Surf City taps into the more uptempo, but still melancholic (or at least dusky) take on that label's signature sounds. But the band makes good on their citations of the Zombies, Sonic Youth, and Animal Collective, among others, as influences, so don't expect straight-up aping -- for instance, you should hear the Wilderness (in extreme pop mode) in the guitar tone of "Mt. Kill" and Avey Tare and friends in the group chants. All that said, the guys have a very promising, impressively assured 6-song EP forthcoming on Morr. Take a listen to the perfect 2-minute pop storm of the opener "Headin' Inside" and the more Animal Collected "Dickshakers Union."
