Dan Sartain plays with Night Marchers in November!!

The 23 year old from Birmingham, Alabama, Dan first attracted attention in the UK in 2005 with the release of ‘Dan Sartain Vs The Serpientes’, his second album, also on One Little Indian. The album had been released in the US on John Reis’ Swami label a year previously and the word of mouth on this new authentic Southern talent had spread. To support the release, Dan travelled to the UK and performed a series of dates around the UK and in London, and in an industry often cursed by the pursuit of style over substance, his honest, bare-knuckle performances encouraged a loyal live support. Ben Swank from the Soledad Brothers, a friend of Dan’s, joined him on drums for many of his early shows. With the release of his debut UK single, ‘Tryin’ To Say’, Dan was invited to perform live sessions on John Kennedy’s show on XFM and on Tom Robinson’s show on 6Music. Steve Lamacq made the single his Record Of The Week on his 6Music show, as did Mark Radcliffe on his Radio 2 slot, with Zane Lowe supporting on his Radio 1 evening show.

The NME debuted him in their prolific Cool List released in November last year with the words “The fact that he recently dealt with stage invaders by waving a broken bottle around and screaming ‘Got off my stage motherfukkaaaasss’ is yet further proof of his irredeemable coolness”. Heavy praise for both his album and live performance followed from critics and fellow performers alike, including Babyshambles’ bassist Drew McConnell who namechecked Sartain in his Tracks Of The Year in The Independent newspaper. Dan’s appeal began to spread throughout Europe, with the Italian Vogue for men, L’Uomo Magazine, not only featuring Dan in the magazine, selecting him as one of three artists to perform at their annual fashion show, broadcast on big screens throughout Milan’s city centre, in January. L’Uomo have a reputation for early talent-spotting, having earmarked The Libertines, Kings Of Leon, The Killers and The Hives for big things before they enjoyed mainstream success.
