With Liverpool Fans Within Their Ranks, ADDISON Strive For Musical And Anfield Glory
“This may not be our year,” says ADDISON frontman Joshua Arce. “But I’ll be damned if United think they’re getting number 19 this time around,” he continues, eliminating any ambiguity as to whether Arce is talking about Liverpool F.C. or his up-and-coming alternative rock band. Arce (pronounced “AR-say” and not as any long-lost Everton-supporting cousins might teasingly refer to him) is the lead singer and rhythm guitarist in San Francisco-based ADDISON, a five-year old rock outfit that has just started to gain radio attention with their recent EP release “Freeze Out.”
The band has also attracted notice for the disc’s bonus track: a cover of a certain well-known tune about “never walking alone.”
That is because while playing anthemic rock music that blends the heavy yet melodic guitars of Oasis as well as elements of the band’s stateside influences, ADDISON are also made up of at least two die-hard Liverpool fans that follow the club’s ups as well as its downs. Luis Baptista plays bass and says that “Josh and I were about to break the band up, but we took the day off to watch Istanbul four years ago at a pub and it changed our lives.” Adds Arce, “we sang ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ about fifty times and got pissed while Stevie G. led the team back, threw up in somebody’s yard, then went and wrote a bunch of songs.” The story takes on special meaning when one learns that Champions League matches start at noon California time.
Liverpool references seem to dot everything the band does: be it the ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ singalong that ends many shows, to the Liverpool FC imagery that permeates the band’s videos, to the members’ attire. “Every now and then you meet a Liverpool fan in the states and you make an instant connection,” says Baptista. “Plus there’s a certain discipline to following a club that lends itself to rehearsing and playing hard in the band.”
Will ADDISON ever make the trip to play in Liverpool? “My great grandfather grew up near Walton Road in the 1880’s and later left for the Boer War,” explains Arce. “I hope to one day find out if he ever watched a game from the Kop when he returned, before he moved to the U.S.”
With a little hard work, ADDISON might make the journey across the pond to pay musical homage to the town that they feel so closely connected to.
