Debut album ‘Skinny Jeans and a Mic’ follows on January 11th
At the forefront of Los Angeles’ burgeoning jerk music craze are teenage duo New Boyz. Their debut single ‘You’re A Jerk’ soundtracks the fast growing scene and features an accompanying video full of guest appearances from the movement’s leading loose-limbed dance crews.
Already a sensation in the States where it built from being a cult underground hit to selling over 600,000 copies, ‘You’re A Jerk’ will be released here on December 21st on Shotty / Asylum / Warner Bros. Records.
Their debut album ‘Skinny Jeans and a Mic’ will follow on January 11th. Its producers include Diplo (MIA’s ‘Paper Planes’) JHawk, Jukebox, Talent and Jay-Nari, and it features guest appearances from Ray J, Tyga, O.N.E., D&D and Kydd-SB.
Ben J and Legacy founded New Boyz after they pooled their resources to buy rudimentary recording equipment. Their sound is influenced by the minimal drum and bass approach of early hip hop, but is also informed by the sonic imprint of hyphy and the Atlanta teen rap scene.
“I knew if we didn’t make our own beats, we’d have to pay people and we didn’t have any money at the time,” says Legacy. “I had to teach myself to make beats. I’d watch YouTube for tutorials.”
The jerk music movement is a stripped down party sound, largely created on home computers for a teenage audience. The single’s success was driven from MySpace to YouTube by a huge quantity of fan-made jerk videos. “We just did ‘You’re A Jerk’ as another song, the fans are the ones that did all the promoting,” explains Ben J. “They started making jerk video after jerk video after jerk video to it.” Their popularity spread further following an infamous red carpet performance at this year’s BET Awards.
