A band can search in vain for an original voice. Whilst Avondale45's roots can be easily identified in both old school punk and more recent punk / new wave bands out there, they have honed a certain uniqueness about their sound, lyrics and gigs.
2009 has seen the band grow in stature, with highly rated performances at Guilfest 2009, a run of successful headline shows, as well as slots supporting the likes of UK Subs, Los Mondo Bongo, Itch (King Blues) and TV Smith.
XMAS TIME
Written as an antidote for the saccharine X-Factor schmaltz that is normally released for Christmas, Xmas Time is written from the point of view of an angry, bitter man who's first love left him a previous yuletide. Whilst all around are having fun, the season does nothing but remind him of the painful time the hurt of his loss, and he thinks to himself out of frustration and anger, YOU F*****G WHORE.
Despite the obvious immediate assumption, the song is not intended to be derogatory, and instead references the negative experiences this guy put ex-girlfriend through. As a highly politically and socially-aware band, the track is drenched in irony, exposing how the character in the story quite wrongly find it acceptable to refer to a woman as “f*****g whore” or harass them for exercising their choice to end a particular relationship, when it is clearly not acceptable (end of).
For those with a nervous disposition, (or a radio authority license to retain ;-) a clean version is also included.
In Al’s (vocals, guitars) own words, “Its not sexist, open your ears and listen to the lyrics. If you’re offended by swearwords, you really should learn to F**K off” [or, listen to the clean version]
VIVA LA REVOLUTION
Viva La Revolution is about a messed up world. How people can be changed and manipulated against one-another by greed and those who try to justify it by claiming they’re righteous, or by masking it in the language of religion. How can anyone justify what happened in Bosnia, Sierra Leone, Rwanda ot Nazi Germany by saying you can destroy entire peoples because of their religious beliefs?
'Wear a pin on your lapel' is in reference to Nazi party members who were expected to wear a swastika pin badge, 'hear the words your prophet says, digest them until you’re dead' is reference to the suicide bombers our world seems to be plagued wit.
Al’s words again:
“Our generation must make sure we never let ourselves be manipulated, never hate anyone else just because the media says you should.
We have a voice, and we should use it to say “F**K THE BNP, F**K THE TERROR THREATS, F**K THE BIGOTS, FACISTS, RACISTS”...Never forget what can happen to people when they don’t voice their true feelings and allow themselves to be turned against one another”.
