A shadowy figure known as Rodriguez was, for many years, lost in musical folklore. A decade ago, he was rediscovered working as a menial day laborer in Detroit, Michigan. He was unaware that his defining album, Cold Fact, had become not only a cult classic, but on the other side of the world, a beacon of revolution.
Rodriguez recorded Cold Fact - his debut album - in 1969, and released it in March 1970. The record is an undisputed classic, featuring the legendary ‘Sugarman’ amongst other tales of love, life and rebellion.
But the album sank without trace, thanks, in part, to some of Rodriguez's more idiosyncratic behavior, like performing at an industry showcase with his back to the audience throughout. When the follow-up, 1972's Coming From Reality, also sold poorly, Rodriguez called an end to his recording career. He'd never even played a proper gig. And he got on with life. Over the years, he turned his hand to local politics, gaining a degree in philosophy, factory work and eventually, hard labour.
However, Rodriguez’ musical career was revived in 1998, when his daughter Eva stumbled across a South African website professing the country’s love for his music. Soon, he was touring Australia, New Zealand and South Africa to wide critical acclaim, and in 2008 his Cold Fact album was re-released in the UK and USA.
2009 has seen Rodriguez release his first studio album in over 30 years, ‘Coming From Reality’, and to celebrate, OH Productions are delighted to announce that he will be playing three UK dates this December. They are as follows:
