New tracks from new Manchester artists January 11th 2010 10” Gatefold Vinyl / Digital
Although Manchester has enjoyed recent success from bands such as The Ting Tings, The Courteeners and the meteoric return of Elbow it has been a while since the city has enjoyed a real progressive and identifiable movement. The next generation of young bands have their sights set firmly on the future without harking back to Manchester clichés.
This record is more than the sum of its parts; it’s a collaborative effort by the people and artists that are going to make Manchester a focal point for new music in 2010. Each of the featured artists on this record share a stage, an ethos, a practice room and a beer or two whilst being each other’s biggest advocates. All acts are at different stages of their careers but it is mutual respect that has brought them together in agreeing to be on this record.
Released on January 11th ‘Love & Disaster 1’ is a statement on how Manchester aims to continue in 2010; these guys are the city’s future with exciting prospects ahead. Here Manchester welcomes in the new guard.
AIRSHIP ‘Kids’
Appearing from nowhere in 2009 Airship craft the perfect indie rock song combining searing riffs, early Radiohead rock-outs and the cinematic scope of Mercury Rev. ‘Kids’ is the perfect example of this, sub-three minutes of pure anthem and just perfect to open up the record as a rallying call. These 21 year olds have already notched up impressive tour supports with Marmaduke Duke, Nine Black Alps and have just finished a full UK stretch with Editors.
DUTCH UNCLES ‘OCDUC’
Dutch Uncles are surely one of the most progressive indie-rock bands around today permanently packing out Manchester venues. Where most 21 year olds are trying to find winning formulas from the same five chords, Dutch Uncles take influence from the likes of Steve Reich, Talking Heads and King Crimson, combining off-kilter time signatures, adventurous compositions and intelligent pop hooks. Duncan Wallis wraps all this up with his unmistakably winding vocal melodies and a stage performance that lies exactly halfway between David Byrne and Ian Curtis. Dutch Uncles have already started to spread their infectiousness across the UK. Many new acts will list their supporters in press releases but ask any of The Futureheads, Baddies, Dananananaykroyd, Marc Riley, Maximo Park, Bombay Bicycle Club who their new favourite band is and the answer will most certainly be Dutch Uncles.
JO ROSE ‘Lastbreath, California’
You may already be familiar with Jo Rose’s (22) exceptional talent through the indie-rock band ‘Fear of Music’ who were signed to Columbia Records at a ridiculously tender age. Now after absorbing new influences (Neil Young, Townes Van Zandt, Bright Eyes) Jo has become the artist he was always destined to be, applying his lyrical and song writing genius to a brand new solo career. A cinematic statement of intent, ‘Lastbreath, California’ could be the soundtrack to the best road movie you have ever seen and before too long (with the production of new road movies permitting) probably will be.
DELPHIC ‘This Momentary’ (EVERYTHING EVERYTHING remix)
Leading this new Manchester revolution is Delphic, set to explode in 2010 with the debut album ‘Acolyte’ released in January. It is often difficult to predict success nowadays but Delphic is a forgone conclusion. ‘This Momentary’ was released on Kitsuné back in September but here has been given an extra special twist by new Manchester heroes Everything Everything (just signed to Geffen Records) who are already officially Zane Lowe’s favourite new band and soon to be yours … along with Delphic, Dutch Uncles, Jo Rose and Airship of course.
