Acclaimed Aussie ‘Garage’ Foursome Unleashing Self-Titled Debut Album In-Stores March 9th
They say good things come in twos. Some 35 years after Brisbane, Australia unleashed Ramones’ precursors The Saints on unsuspecting rock fans, the port capital of the Australian state of Queensland is once again the focus of the indie rock world, home base of newly signed Ecstatic Peace/Universal Motown rockers Violent Soho. The explosive foursome’s much-anticipated self-titled U.S. debut album will be blazing into U.S. record stores and the digital domain on March 9th.
Violent Soho’s punk-splattered debut delivers a splintering battery of two-and-a-half-minute rock missives, leaving reviewers scrambling for appropriate descriptions of the combustible band’s trademark treads. Is it grunge? Is it thrash? Or a ‘revelatory’ re-invention of both, as tastemaker blogs across the digital landscape see it - ‘Violent Soho’s rhythm section is so powerful it threatens to flatten buildings….. The band’s debut U.S. single, “Jesus Stole My Girlfriend,” has quickly catapulted them on to the radio and digital radar. The song dented the Top 30 of Billboard’s Alternative Singles chart within it first weeks of availability, aptly displaying-the-group’s live-and-let-loose attitude, pegged by Brooklyn The Borough scribes as a raucous ‘makeout session’ for music fans starved for authentic, hardcore live rock. The Aussie quartet has been holing up in Brooklyn between jaunts on some of the most enviable live treks of the past couple years, opening up for Band Of Skulls, Jack White’s 2009 consortium Dead Weather, and indie legends such as Built To Spill and Dinosaur, Jr., among others.
Signed by Sonic Youth alum Thurston Moore and his label Ecstatic Peace (a venerable indie magnet since the early 80s ) after a much-buzzed about 2009 New York City showcase, Universal Music Group’s 2006 distribution deal with the label syncs up Universal Motown Records for the U.S. roll out of the band this spring. Violent Soho is currently on the road again, with plans to ignite this year’s South by Southwest Music festival with a series of Austin, TX gigs from March 18 thru the 20th. The group will also be returning to their home-away-from-home, Brooklyn, NY on March 23rd for a live performance at the Brooklyn Bowl with the Black Lips and Box Elders, with the formidable lineup playing the following evening at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom.
Violent Soho is Luke Henery on bass, Mike Richards on drums, James Tidswell - guitars/vocals, and lead singer/guitarist Luke Boerdam. Previous Australian indie releases by the group include Pigs And TV, a well-received EP released in 2006, and 2008’s We Don’t Belong Here. Songs included on their self-titled U.S. album debut include “Son of Sam”, “Bombs over Broadway”, “Here Be Dragons,” “Slippery Tongue,” and “Outsider,” among others.
