Born to a music minister in Amarillo, Texas, she began learning violin at a community college at just 4 years of age. And now she’s recently seen the release of her new album Mama, on Partisan records. She’s a performer, producer, singer and composer; one that blends between classic and modern instrumentation. She is Emily Wells.

When her family moved to Indianapolis, it was there that she discovered Bob Dylan, Nina Simone and Biggie Smalls, and progressed more to songwriting, guitars and home recording. Releasing her own music from a young age, Wells learned to keep her work close, and toured independently while developing her palate and performance across the U.S. And it was in a garage studio in Los Angeles that Wells' recorded her 2008 breakthrough album, The Symphonies: Dreams Memories & Parties.

Three years later, Wells returns with Mama, a collection of songs as richly hued and as warm as ever. She, in fact, rented a tiny cabin on a Topanga Canyon horse ranch to produce it, playing most of the instruments herself (with a little help from longtime touring companions, drummer Sam Halterman and bassist Joey Reina). She recorded the raw tracks to tape, and without punch-ins or loops, often in one take.

In contrast to her conceptual and experimental record The Symphonies, the songs of Mama are more traditional and universal, in terms of their structures and expressions of love and grief. 2012 finds Wells touring in support of Mama, and preparing for the release of Pillowfight, her long awaited collaboration with legendary producer Dan The Automator.

Baths (aka Will Wisenfeld) recently got ahold of the Mama’s opening track ‘Piece of It,’ and dropped a graceful, evocative remix which was premiered on RCRD LBL. This is the first of many head-turning remixes that Wells has come up with. Others include: The Blow, Teen Daze, and Dan the Automator (the latter of which she also has a forthcoming collaborative project with called Pillowfight).
