It’s often part of human nature that after taking a long break from something, you come back to it revitalized and with renewed passion. Such is the case with Nashville-based Americana artist Lynn Taylor, formerly of the ragtag string band Felix Wiley. Taylor left the band about a decade ago to start a family and to devote time and energy to his landscaping business.

But Taylor was merely exploring different avenues, and in 2009, after he began playing small local shows, he teamed up with some old buddies and several other prominent local artists. When it came time to record an album, he turned to another old friend, Paul Burch. The result is the album, Barfly, which was recorded mostly live at Paul’s Pan American studio in 2011.

"Most of the songs were caught in the first or second take, even the ones that had never been heard by the musicians before that evening" said Taylor. "We also wanted to record this album in an environment where you could hear the space. I think we captured these tunes the way they were intended to be heard."

That “live” sound is something that was important to Taylor, and that raw charm is captured on Barfly, which is set for release with a street date of May 22, and a CD release party May 18 at The Family Wash in East Nashville.
"I got together with some good friends, who also happen to be great musicians,” said Taylor. “And we made a record I'm really proud of.”
Raised in east Tennessee and Louisiana, the son of a preacher, Lynn Taylor first became interested in songwriting when a Sunday school teacher gave him an old beater guitar and a stack of dusty Bob Dylan records. He moved to Nashville in the mid-nineties and formed Felix Wiley. The group recorded a couple of albums and played in Nashville and the mid-South for several years, opening for Todd Snider, BR5-49, Drive-By Truckers, The Derailers, John Hartford and Ralph Stanley along the way.

But now with the release of Barfly Lynn Taylor looks set to grace the airwaves once again, and this time, the Tennessee boy looks set to do it on his own terms.
