Vampire Weekend's Baio recently released his debut solo EP, Sunburn, on Greco-Roman. Three tracks of tropical electronica inspired by a trip to Mexico and a nasty case of modern art-shaped sunburn.
EP opener Sunburn Modern's sound is that of clattering balkan rhythms, pitched-up euphoric vocals, lush, rising melotron chords and 8-bit inspired melodies, the perfect soundtrack to a strange and ethereal summer night. Middle track 'Anonymity 1' is melancholy leads and ecstatic house-piano, rolling percussion and polyrhythmic blips that wouldn't sound out of place next to the music of Spaniards John Talabot and Delorean. Closer 'Tanto' is a sample-based take on steel drum house and features underground Chilean popstar Matias Aguayo on vocals.
