826 National Teams up with Wilco and Out of Print
826 National, the nonprofit youth literacy organization founded by award-winning author Dave Eggers, has teamed up with the band Wilco and t-shirt company Out of Print to promote and raise funds to support youth literacy. Starting today Out of Print will offer a limited edition shirt for sale, which will benefit writing programs for thousands of underserved youth in Brooklyn and Chicago.
The new Out of Print shirt features a graphic of the original Don Quixote book cover designed by the artist Edward McKnight Kauffer in the 1950s. The back of the shirt features a design by Miguel Herrera of Houston who won an open design contest inspired by the band Wilco. Participants had a limited time to conceptualize and design a graphic based on the following quote from Don Quixote selected by Jeff Tweedy: “...I can no more remember one syllable of it than the shapes of last year's clouds.”
The shirt will be sold with a copy of Wilco’s latest CD, The Whole Love for $32. A significant portion of the proceeds will be donated to 826 National to support its Brooklyn and Chicago chapters.
“We’re so grateful to Wilco and Out of Print Clothing for turning a project that celebrates reading and writing into a benefit for 826 chapters and the students we serve in Brooklyn and Chicago,” said 826 National CEO Gerald Richards.
T-shirts are available for purchase on the Out of Print and Wilco websites.
About 826 National
826 National is a network of eight writing and tutoring centers founded by award-winning author Dave Eggers and educator Ninive Calegari. 826 centers offer a variety of inventive programs that provide under-resourced students, ages 6-18, with opportunities to explore their creativity and improve their writing skills. The organization also aims to help teachers get their classes excited about writing. Their mission is based on the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. Last year 826 tutoring centers — located in Ann Arbor, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, DC — served over 29,000 students. Wilco was formed in the mid-‘90s by singer-songwriter-guitarist Jeff Tweedy. The band's latest release is the Grammy-nominated The Whole Love. It's the third album by the band’s current lineup, which solidified in 2004 when guitarist Nels Cline and guitarist/keyboardist Patrick Sansone joined Tweedy, founding bassist John Stirratt, drummer Glenn Kotche and keyboardist Mikael Jorgensen. Together they have released Sky Blue Sky in 2007 and the Grammy-nominated Wilco (The Album) in 2009. Wilco has released ten studio albums to date, including Mermaid Avenue Volumes 1 & 2, which, in collaboration with British folk singer Billy Bragg, set original music to song lyrics Woody Guthrie. Wilco’s dBpm Records is a full-service label releasing all future Wilco recordings and more. ANTI- Records provides distribution and additional label services for all dBpm Releases. In 2010 Wilco created and launched the Solid Sound Festival, a three-day festival of music, art, comedy and more, hosted by MASS MoCA in North Adams, MA.
