'Freckles', the self-created-directed-edited first video from Shel, the “power quartet of femme fatale wunderkind sisters” (MartianLeaks.com) is out now with first looks from AOL Spinner “Video of The Day" and LuckyMag.com’s “Shop It Out".
Watch 'Freckles':
Of the song, 'Freckles', Eva Holbrook says, “Happy endings are rarely how we imagine them. Probably because we always know what we want, but seldom know what we really need.” Of the video, the first of 13 planned (one for each song), creator/director/editor Sarah Holbrook says, “Making music videos is a totally different mindset, you have to completely change the way you think about the music. We dream, style, act, shoot, direct and edit almost all our music videos, being able to do it all in-house is a blessing and a curse.”
Currently on tour in support of their forthcoming eponymous full-length debut set for August 7th release on Moraine Records/Mad King, the band plays the Rockwood Music Hall in New York City July 25th, Copperfield’s in Boston July 26th, The Basement in Nashville August 6th, and Hotel Café in Los Angeles August 14th, where they will open for The Dunwells.
Recorded in their home studio in Ft. Collins, CO, The Blueberry Room, and at The Blue Room in Nashville, the album was co-produced with six-time Grammy-winner Brent Maher (Shelby Lynne, The Judds, Tina Turner), and all songs on the album, except 'The Battle of Evermore', were written and arranged by the group—view live performance video of the track below.
Comprised of four sisters ages 18-24—Sarah Holbrook (vocals, violin), Hannah Holbrook (vocals, piano, keyboards), Eva Holbrook (lead vocals, mandolin), and Liza Holbrook (drums, percussion, djembe), who are classically trained and home-schooled—the band name is an acronym for their first names.
Growing up in a musical household encouraged by their father, a respected local Ft. Collins musician, they first appeared on stage as his backing band, Shel has been performing since 2005. The self-titled effort is the group’s first full-length studio album and the follow-up to 2011’s When The Dragon Came Down EP.
Gracing the stages of Lilith Fair, Yo Gabba Gabba Live tour, Four Corners Folk Festival, Cornerstone, International Folk Alliance, Music City Roots, and South by Southwest, they have also been featured on ABC Family/ABC.com’s “On The Rise,” in Glade’s Scented Oil Candles national television ad campaign, on NPR’s Etown, and garnered the attention of KCRW DJ and music supervisor Chris Douridas who hailed their Try To Scream EP (2010) as “one of the most impressive debuts of the year.”
