Signing to London Records and supporting the red Hot Chilli Peppers on tour at the start of the 90s with his band Atom Seed, champions of the UK’s funk-rock scene, guitarist Simon James Onions went on to marry industrial rock with Afro-Caribbean rhythms in Moko Jumbi. Signing to A&M Records after their debut gig at London's Water Rats, the band recorded a debut album before the label went bust, eventually forcing them to split.
Rediscovering his acoustic guitar, Simon signed to the independent Stovepony label, launching his debut solo album at the Green Man Festival in 2006. Since then, he has switched almost exclusively to acoustic 12-string combined with a series of FX to create an absorbing amalgam of Krautrock, drone-folk, deep psych and space-blues stylings.
In the throes of readying material for his next album, a chance meeting with Talvin Singh at a gig at The Birkbeck Tavern in East London led to one-one off live exploration. Completely unplanned and unrehearsed, the performance – featuring Simon on guitar and Talvin on tabla – met with a rapturous response from the capacity crowd. Further live events and studio experiments are now being planned. Watch this space…
