The new single 'I Give Up Myself' from Poppy Perezz could well be the soundtrack to a perfect summer’s day ... That’s ‘summer’ as in the smell of freshly cut grass, sticky tarmac and coconut sun cream rather than the feel of squelchy boots, chapped lips and frostbitten extremities that passes for it these days. You mean you don’t remember those hazy, halcyon days? Well, everyone’s favourite Anglo-Mexican-Trinidadian four-piece are here to jog your memory ...
Watch // Poppy Perezz // I Give Up Myself
Hot on the heels of the forthcoming debut album We Are Yours, Poppy Perezz serve up another infectious slice of tropical world-pop – though this time theWest African Highlife and Mexican Mariachi influences have taken a backseat, replaced by an altogether more rootsy disco flavour. Lyrically, it’s less the paean to romantic submission you might expect, more a celebration of surrendering yourself to the universe and being as one with all its wondrous, cosmic glory (man). With its tight ska rhythms, elastic bass, clipped guitars and staccato trumpets all perfectly framed by Poppy Villiers Stuart's crystal clear azure tones, it’s a song that’s equal parts propulsive and laid-back, sunrise and sunset.
The remixes come in two exquisite, thirst-quenching flavours: Panzon Tropical's stripped-down, electro-dub cut & paste is a hypnotic thing of mystery and wonder while Misery Guts’ lilting, cinematic, slo-mo delight is an all-encompassing, aural hammock for the soul.
