The Loom are an acclaimed indie-folk quartet from Brooklyn, New York, led by guitarist/vocalist John Fanning alongside Jon Alvarez (drums), Dan DeSloover (bass) and Lis Rubard (vocals, French horn, trumpet). The Loom are laying a unique path, skirting the territories of modern indie rock, alt-folk and ambient soundscapes. They have toured extensively in the United States and Canada, and played SXSW, Pop Montreal, CMJ and many other music festivals. The Loom were featured in Paste Magazine’s “Best of What’s Next” series and New York Times called the band the “next big thing”.
The Loom’s new album, Teeth, combines searching folk, intricate percussion and psych-influenced dissonance and atmospherics, recalling at times the raw power and lyrical vision of Neutral Milk Hotel and the atmospheric mastery of Shearwater, all while carving out their own unique musical presence.
Recorded in a cozy Manhattan studio, Teeth builds from sombre drones of distortion and lonely French horn to manic layers of trumpet, guitar fuzz and cymbal crashes. Vocal harmonies are alternately joyful and haunting. The album captures the anxiety, doubt and weight of expectation The Loom are experiencing as they settle into adulthood in 2012, feeling a bit too old for unbridled optimism but a bit too young for abject cynicism.
Teeth was released in the US by well respected indie label Crossbill Records (home to Sea of Bees, Matt Bauer) to great acclaim from NPR, AOL/Spinner, TimeOut Magazine, Fader, Consequence of Sound, and many others, and accompanied the release with a national tour in 2011 and 2012. The Loom have shared stages with artists such as Josh T Pearson, The Acorn, First Aid Kit, The Antlers and Sharon Van Etten. Teeth will be distributed in the UK by Forte in autumn 2012.
