Armed with quality lyricism and a delivery more akin to his American counterparts, UK-based rapper Adian Coker is ready to make his mark on both sides of the pond beginning with the release of 'Angels & Demons' from his forthcoming mixtape. The track drops today as a free download in conjunction with a cinematic video that made its premiere on SoulCulture. Coker takes the roles of rapper, producer and songwriter into his own hands resulting in a sound that will undoubtedly make a mark in the industry.

I wrote the song about a year ago,” states Coker. “I remember having written the strings led intro and then adding the drums and guitar. It sounded so raw. So there was a really massive contrast between the two sections. Smooth vs. edgy, light vs dark. Angels and demons.”

Directed by Tim Brown, the video was shot at a manor in Kent, south of Greater London. Coker adds, “It is a quintessentially British location, like something out of a murder mystery film or Gosford Park. It had loads of character and was a bit eerie and gloomy, which reflected the track perfectly.

Born in Sierra Leone twenty-four years ago, Coker has had to fight for every inch of his success. He moved to the UK aged four, and as an enthusiastic seven year old, he first started to learn classical guitar followed by keys and drums.

In high school, he was given the opportunity to learn the art of studio recording thanks to his music teacher. “We were taken to a room with real basic gear, an old PC, Logic software, a microphone, small speakers... once I entered that room I barely left it again. It was a major step,” says Coker.

As the years wound down his talents soon got him noticed while doing sessions at Jutland Studios in South London. The studio manager gave him a job producing for good urban acts at the time from the Mitchell Brothers to D-Banj. It was at Jutland Studios that Coker first encountered a key figure in his development, well-respected British producer and engineer, James 'Lerock' Loughrey who worked on records by Joss Stone, Beverley Knight, Sugababes and Ronan Keating among others.

Besides building up a considerable body of music, Coker was notching up an English degree from Goldsmiths University in London as well as working to earn funds to progress his career. In late 2010, he self-released his first mixtape, The Colour of Magic, and despite having a very limited, underground promotion, it caught the attention of some the most respected Urban DJs on national radio BBC Radio 1Xtra.

After two years of further crafting his skills as a rapper and producer as well as finding the right management team, Coker is finally set to take flight with a landmark mixtape due at the end of the year and the launch of his own independent label: Bloom In June. 'Angels & Demons' is just a taste of what’s to come from this promising new artist.
