Having spent the Summer working on his second album, a full-band release featuring numerous guest luminaries from throughout his career, West London songwriter Phil Martin returns to host a one-off showcase gig at historic live music pub, The Betsey Trotwood in Clerkenwell, London, aided and abetted by some of his favourite musicians.
“Phil Martin & Friends” takes place on Friday 21 September from 8-11pm and will feature appearances by Gary J Lammin (Cock Sparrer, Bermondsey Joyriders), Martin Hungry Dog (Hungry Dog Brand) and Andrea Black. There will also be various other ‘pop up’ appearances throughout the evening!
Released in January, Phil’s debut, Before We Go To Paradise presented us with a selection of original songs, alongside the words of some of England’s greatest poets – Shakespeare, Coleridge, Hopkins, Blake – recast and reimagined against the emotive, occasionally quirky, background of Phil’s original music. But much more than this, by incorporating a spare, gentle background of acoustic guitar, keys and sax, Phil has set out to deliver a quintessentially English album dwelling on spirituality, resignation and humour in the modern world.
Having served time on the 80s and 90s indie-folk scene with Dr Millar & The Cute Hoors and The Shanakies (Blur’s support band of choice for the Parklife Tour), Phil has latterly been found among the ranks of Vic Godard & The Subway Sect, Jowe Head & The Demi-Monde, The Bitter Springs and The Men They Couldn’t Hang. Influenced as much by Jake Thackray as Marc Bolan, Phil Martin is – in the truest sense – both languid balladeer and punk demagogue.
Phil’s new album Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark will be released on Brentford Records (via Proper) in the New Year.
The Betsey Trotwood is at 56 Farringdon Road, London EC1R 3BL. Please contact me directly if you wish to attend this event. Phil is also available for interview.
