After going on sale last week, UK buzz band, alt-J's debut Australian shows sold out in just a few minutes. Currently the hottest ticket in town, the self-proclaimed folk-step band is due to play shows to capacity crowds in Melbourne and Sydney. A band that many critics are dubbing "the next big thing," fans were quick to snap up tickets to the shows.
This news comes amid the excitement of the band's shortlisting for the prestigious Barclaycard Mercury Music Prize. It was announced that alt-J's stunning debut album, An Awesome Wave (out now through Liberator Music / Infectious), is amongst eleven other British artists to take the coveted prize. alt-J have been shortlisted for the prize alongside artists such as Plan B, The Maccabees, Jessie Ware, Richard Hawley and Lianne La Havas. The Barclaycard Mercury Music Prize recognises UK albums of the year, regardless of sales, media hype and mainstream success and chooses artists from a range of genres. The Album of The Year will be announced at the awards show at The Roundhouse on 1 November.
Joe Newman, lead-singer and guitarist of alt-J, says of the nomination, “it's pretty amazing actually, I'm pretty stunned. To be in that screenshot of great British albums from 2012... to be involved in that is great. We're just really stoked. We can't wait to go to the party, get pissed and have a great time; enjoy everyone's company and soak it all up.”
The nomination comes after a hugely successful year for alt-J. Their critically acclaimed album, An Awesome Wave, crash landed into the UK Top 20 in June whilst peaking at #3 on iTunes, making it one of the biggest debuts of the year so far.
Locally, interest and their popularity is growing exponentially with radio support and sales increasing week on week. Live-wise, the band is going from strength to strength seeing them rapidly sell out shows in Australia, the UK and the USA, amongst other territories. It's clear that this band is on a non-stop trajectory straight to the top.
alt-J is Gwil Sainsbury [guitar/bass], Joe Newman [guitar/vocals], Gus Unger-Hamilton [keyboards] and Thom Green [drums].
