Launching for the very first time with an event in London, Belfast Music Week is an annual celebration of a great musical city. With this year’s Belfast Music Week having a particular emphasis on breaking new bands, two hotly tipped Northern Irish artists will be performing live, Wonder Villains and Katherine Philippa.
In addition, co-director Glenn Leyburn will preview his new film ‘Good Vibrations’, a biopic of Belfast punk impresario Terri Hooley.
The night will also host exclusive footage from ‘What We See’, the new tour film by Northern Ireland’s most successful recent musical export Two Door Cinema Club. The film will be premiered during Belfast Music Week.
The event will be hosted by Radio 1/BBC Northern Ireland DJ Phil Taggart.
A four-piece from Derry, Wonder Villains are the winners of NI Music ‘Contenders’ title. Their first two singles, ‘Zola’ and ‘Ferrari’, received plays nationally on BBC Radio 1, Radio 2, 6 Music, XFM, Q and Absolute Radio, and support from RTE - with ‘Zola’ also picking up an Introducing Playlist on BBC Radio 1 and landing the band a Maida Vale Huw Stephens session.
Katherine Philippa is a 20 year-old pianist/vocalist from Portadown. A unique talent influenced as much by classical composers like Tchaikovsky and Arvo Pärt as she is by pop musicians, fittingly Katherine recently performed at Ulster Hall on Belfast backed by the Ulster Orchestra.

‘Good Vibrations’ tells the remarkable story of Terri Hooley, Ulster’s Godfather of Punk.
Hooley discovered The Undertones and, through his Good Vibrations record shop and label, enabled alternative music to be heard and to flourish in Belfast, during the darkest days of Northern Ireland’s troubles.
Directed by Glenn Leyburn and Lisa Barros D’Sa, the film stars Richard Dormer, Jodie Whittaker, and Dylan Moran. The soundtrack was provided by DJ/producer David Holmes, and Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody, Jonny Quinn and Nathan Connolly are among the investors. ‘Good Vibrations’ will premiere at the BFI London Film Festival on Friday 19th October.
“If you’re going to London Film Festival my top tip would be Good Vibrations - an absolute humdinger with real heart and soul” Mark Kermode
“This is a film that should be shown to anyone who wants to play, release or make music” John Robb
About Belfast Music Week 2012
Belfast Music Week runs from November 4th – 11th, offering more than 200 events across all geographical parts and many genres. The event began in 2010 as a spontaneous response from the local music community to the arrival of MTV and the Mark Ronson show at the Waterfront Hall. It was such an inspiring project that it returned in November 2011, leading up to the MTV EMA party at the Odyssey.
This year the accent is on unique moments, breaking bands and a chance for local industry people to step forward. At the heart of this new plan is a talent showcase at the Limelight complex on Ormeau Avenue, November 8th. Twelve of Northern Ireland’s most promising acts will play live in the freshly refurbished venue, attended by entertainment professionals from across the world.
Saturday night at the Ulster Hall (November 10) sees a night of electronic music, celebrating 25 years of dance culture in Belfast. There will be workshops and exhibitions during the day, and a big party in the evening, plus some very special guests to be announced.
From the Ulster Orchestra to hip hop sessions, from acoustic lunchtimes at HMV records to a rollicking night dedicated to local punk legend Terri Hooley, this is a week that offers variety and Belfast at its most welcoming.
