Bristol 4 piece Velcro Hooks have been together for little over a year and are now releasing their debut EP ‘Gymnophoria’ via local label Howling Owl Records on November 19th. The formation of the band can be traced back to the Guatemalan jungle and a freak meeting between Canadian Jenner Blank and Bristolian Thomas Mason. The pair were reunited a year after and quickly put together the band with fellow Bristolians Dominic Mitchison and George Garratt.
Velcro Hooks initially opted against the modern internet route and set to work crafting their sound in their DIY studio and live show at various house parties, crypts and other makeshift venues in Bristol. It wasn’t until they’d played their third sold out show before they caught the attention of notorious local label Howling Owl who put out their debut single ‘The Surfing Song’.
The Velcro Hooks sound has been compared to Pixies and Velvet Underground. One early blog post commented on the ‘’shit mix of QOTSA riffs, elements of noise rock a la Sonic Youth coupled with Beastie Boys delivery’’. Their exciting early live shows have also seen them support bands like Towns, Weird Dreams and La Sera.
The 6 track ‘’Gymnophoria’’ EP is due for release via Howling Owl Records on November 19th. In support of this, Velcro Hooks are supporting Towns on October 18th and then play their Ep launch at the Bristol Diving School on November 17th.
