Billboard is reporting that The Replacements have reunited to record their first new material in more than 16 years.



Singer/guitarist Paul Westerberg, bassist Tommy Stinson and drummer Chris Mars convened in the band's Minneapolis hometown to record two Westerberg-penned songs: "Message to the Boys" and "Pool & Dive."



The tracks will appear on the recently announced greatest hits disc titled Do You Know Who I Think I Was? The Best of Replacements which is due out May 23rd. Session drummer Josh Freese played drums on the songs while Mars contributed backing vocals.


Though never successful in the mainstream, the loved and influential band, which formed in 1979, released seven albums and helped define the then fledgling Minneapolis punk rock scene along with Hüsker Dü and Soul Asylum .
