Paul Westerberg songwriting in upcoming animated film

The Wall Street Journal has published a spotlight on former Replacements frontman Paul Westerberg due to his work scoring and songwriting for Sony Pictures Animation debut film Open Season. The article states that the Mats frontman submitted about 30 songs to the project, 10 of which ended up on the soundtrack. The track "I Belong" will also likely be submitted to the Golden Globes and Academy Awards. The version of the song that appears in the film and soundtrack were performed by Pete Yorn, but any honours the track garners will likely go to the songwriter. The article describes the trials of working on such a project, including the inevitable changes that are required by the studio. Paul revealed "They went through my vocals with a fine-tooth comb... I had a couple grunts in there and stuff and a few suggestive lyrics that they weren't wild about."At the film's premier in Los Angeles this Monday night Westerberg will be joined by Replacements bassist Tommy Stinson to perform two songs. He commented on the odd venue for the reunion-of-sorts, musing "We get back together to open up for a cartoon, in front of a bunch of people who never heard of us. That's fitting."
